Job overview
The CYP Eating Disorders Day Hospital Service is currently mobilising. This specialist provision delivers intensive, evidence-based care to children & young people experiencing moderate to severe eating disorders. This innovative service aims to bridge the gap between inpatient and community care, offering a safe and structured alternative to Tier 4 admission & facilitating earlier discharge from hospital settings.
Operating through a MDT working collaboratively to provide holistic, person-centred care, each professional brings their expertise to support physical health monitoring, nutritional rehabilitation, psychosocial interventions & occupational engagement, all tailored to the unique needs of each young person & their family.
- In-reach and Outreach support to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions & reduce relapse.
- Intensive day hospital interventions focused on recovery, risk management, & re-engagement with daily life.
- Meal support and psychoeducation for young people & their families, promoting sustainable recovery at home.
- Multidisciplinary care planning and supervision, ensuring continuity & quality of care across settings.
- Training and consultation to professionals and carers, enhancing system-wide understanding and support for eating disorders.
Main duties of the job
- Prevent unnecessary admission to Tier 4 or acute paediatric wards.
- Facilitate earlier & safe discharge from Tier 4 hospital.
- Deliver intensive & evidence-based community interventions to reduce relapse & re-admission.
- Act as a bridge between acute services, the community eating disorder team & families.
- Provide advice, meal support & guidance to systems surrounding the patient.
- Provide monitoring of physical health of children & young people including weight/height checks
- Supporting in high intensity work aimed at managing risk and providing an alternative to admission for severely unwell young people.
- Provide meal support to young people & families evaluating the process at each visit.
- Providing psychosocial interventions focused on clinically indicated interventions e.g. distress tolerance, emotion regulation using DBT techniques, basic CBT, motivational exercises, positive behavior support for young people with learning disabilities, psycho-education, distraction activities, supporting symptom management, problem solving skills.
- Assess, plan & implement & evaluate patient care plans in relation to physical health, as part of wider CEDS care plan for the patient.
- To manage challenging/distressing/sensitive situations & patient behaviour in a calm and safe manner & to use therapeutic nursing skills to engage with the patient/family.
- Support discharge planning through supported day leave with meal supervision

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Mental Health Nurse with experience of working with Children and Young People OR Registered Children’s Nurse
- Evidence of continued professional development.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge across a range of paediatric procedures, underpinned by relevant theory
- Training in psychosocial interventions.
- Training in the management of eating disorders.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of nursing young people who are suffering from mental health difficulties.
- Experience of developing care plans/packages for young people, and giving specialist advice to young people dependent on their need
- Working in a multidisciplinary team. Experience of negotiation and conflict management and in clinical situations.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of maintaining team medical/nursing equipment, stock levels, ordering stock supplies Experience of supervising other staff.
- Experience of working in specialist mental health/ learning disability settings
Skills
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate working knowledge/understanding of evidence based practice.
- Skills in engaging with hard-to-reach young people and families
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to relate sensitively to young people with mental health difficulties and their carers
- Skills in paediatric nursing assessment, and in assessing and interpreting complex needs of patients
