Job overview
Applications are invited for a Bariatric Consultant at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM).
UHNM is a large acute teaching hospital and major trauma centre in Staffordshire with two sites- Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke on Trent and County Hospital in Stafford.
We are looking for a dynamic, high calibre Surgeon. Who has the ability to deliver first class clinical care on a day to day basis within this extremely busy environment, participate in the on-call and be prepared to participate fully in undergraduate teaching.
This post has been established to support the General Surgery directorate with bariatric surgery. The appointee would be expected to have close working relationship with General Surgery, Gastroenterology and Emergency Department. There is on call, ward cover, theatres and clinics included in this role. Recent experience of working in a busy acute trust is essential.
Main duties of the job
The consultant post aims to work alongside the Upper GI team to help to deliver benign Upper GI surgery and bariatric surgery at the UHNM.
Subject to the conditions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, you are expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters. In particular, where you manage employees, you will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.
You have responsibility for the work and supervision of junior medical staff who work with you and you will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to them.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- FRCS or equivalent
- Full registration with GMC
- Success in Intercollegiate specialty examination or overseas equivalent or specialty accreditation if acquired prior to introduction of such examinations.
- CESR Application – Within 6 months of approval. (Date of submission must be stated in your application)
Desirable criteria
- MD or other Higher Degree
- Entry on Specialist Register or in U.K. training scheme and within 6 months of award of CCST at time of interview.
Academic Achievements, Research & Publication
Essential criteria
- Proven research ability including publications in referenced journals
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience in General Surgery & GI surgery
Desirable criteria
- Advanced endoscopic Skills
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in relevant specialty.
- Experience in/ or desire to develop Robotic surgery
Professional & Multidiscplinary Team Working
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
Desirable criteria
- Formal teaching qualification
Management & Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of Audit management
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering change within a specialist unit.
