Job overview

Acute Paediatrics within the West Suffolk Hospital comprises of Paediatric Rainbow Children’s Ward and Children’s Assessment Unit and Paediatric Emergency Department.  We provide care to children and young people aged 0-16yrs across a range of medical and surgical specialities including, medicine, surgery, ENT & orthopaedics. 

 

We are looking for a Passionate Band 6 nurse who is motivated and committed to working predominantly within our inpatient setting which includes both a Paediatric Ward and Children’s Assessment Unit.

Main duties of the job

You will play a key role in the senior nursing team; providing quality family-centered care to our patients and their families and be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and clinical skills.

You should have the ability to motivate and influence a team in response to the evolving needs of the service, adapting to the needs of the unit on a day-to-day basis.  The successful candidate will actively participate in and contribute to the management of the department and work as a mentor, teaching and supervising junior staff including, student nurses and nursing assistants. You will be keen to learn and develop new skills and knowledge through the availability of a variety of training opportunities whilst facilitation the learning needs of others.

The post holder will be required to work within a challenging clinical environment and undertake shift work which will include nights and weekends.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (Child Branch) or RN adult with relevant acute paediatric experience.
  • Relevant teaching qualification.
  • Experience of mentorship / preceptorship.
  • Basic Life Support or PILS.
Desirable criteria
  • EPALS trained

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant nursing practice in acute paediatric setting for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Experience as Staff Nurse
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing ward / team leader role.

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Research-based knowledge in relevant area.
  • Knowledge and experience of intravenous therapy.
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Good time management and organisational skills.
  • Leadership skills and ability to work in a team skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Paediatric A&E experience / PICU / HDU.

Personal qualities

Essential criteria
  • Flexible approach to working hours/duties.
