Job overview

We are seeking two outstanding individuals to join our Board as Non-Executive Directors from 1st September 2025. 

The successful candidates must embody a strong commitment to the NHS, and share the values of our Partner Trusts. 

In addition, we are seeking specific skills for each of the two roles. The medical specialist will need to bring skills relevant to BSPS, ideally as a Clinical Pathologist though we would consider other relevant specialities such as a GP.  The Finance specialist will bring current knowledge of best practice in corporate accounting and audit.  Ideally, we would wish candidates for both roles to demonstrate prior experience of successfully Chairing Board committees.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidates will have:

  • A strong commitment to public service and NHS principles
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and people skills  
  • Experience in building strong teams and encouraging a positive, inclusive culture  
  • A clear focus on equality, diversity, and inclusion  
  • Previous experience at Board level, with an understanding of the difference between executive and non-executive roles
  • Confidence in identifying and addressing challenges, including underperformance, and the ability to ask the right questions and analyse information effectively

Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is one of the largest NHS pathology networks in the county. A contractual joint venture between five NHS Foundation Trusts, operating with a unified management, financial and governance structure, it serves a population of 3.2 million; processes over 50 million tests per year; employs 1,600 clinicians, scientists, and support staff; and has costs associated approaching £150 million.

BSPS’s five partner Trusts are: Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS FT, Frimley Health NHS FT, Royal Berkshire NHS FT, Royal Surrey NHS FT and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Senior Medical/Clinical Leadership - Senior level medical or clinical experience gained in either a medical, nursing or allied health professional discipline with a strong service delivery background and a demonstrable track record of delivering quality improvement at a strategic level
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
  • Prior Board experience and a clear understanding of the distinction between executive and non-executive contributions
  • An understanding of public service values and accountability
  • Links to the area and a general understanding of the local and health needs of the community
  • Knowledge and exposure to delivering improvements in equality and diversity within organisations

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree educated and / or professional registered qualification / or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills gained though senior level experience

Measurable Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as an effective member of the Board and to contribute to a continued patient focused culture
  • Good understanding of risk management and finance, budgeting and control
  • Demonstrable commitment to the Trust's values and the principles of the NHS
  • Knowledge of public service values and the ability to understand their relevance to Foundation Trusts
  • Real enthusiasm to help the Trust deal with the challenge of providing high-quality healthcare with increasing efficiency
  • Self-Awareness - understands own emotions, strengths and limitations
