Job overview

We are looking to recruit an Systems and Projects Accountant to work in our busy Financial Services Team.

This role is available as a band 6 role for candidates with the essential criteria of 'Diploma level of a professional accountancy qualification or equivalent experience'.  Candidates without this criteria, will be considered and if successful will be required to gain the qualification of AAT Level 4 within 2 years or an equivalent accountancy qualification.

The role is a generic role across all the financial services departments which would include, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Financial Systems, Capital Finance, Central Technical Finance. But will be initially and primarily placed in Financial Systems.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will be required to work in Regent Point, and from time to time may be required to work at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital.

The successful applicant will be required to manage the Systems Teams and to assist in the day-to-day operation of the and maintenance & updating of the Trusts various Finance Related systems.

The post will require communicating and directing efforts across multiple teams, in efforts to make process improvements while leading on department projects.

This role will require the successful applicant to reconcile system interfaces , such as Payroll 24/7 allocate and JAC pharmacy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Band 6

  • To play an advanced role in assisting the Financial Services Manager in the provision of a high-quality Systems and Projects service and deputising when necessary.
  • To work Flexibly as required to meet the needs of the various finance department teams
  • To ensure the transactions relating to Trust activities are processed in a timely manner.
  • To work flexibly and actively to assist in the collection or payment of monies relating to the trust activities.
  • To take immediate action and any remedial actions, required to ensure the accurate financial recording of the Trust activities
  • To provide support to departmental managers and other Finance colleagues.
  • To provide Supervisory support to band 5, band 4, band 3, band 2 colleagues.
  • To be responsible for the maintenance and updating aspects associated with the Trusts financial systems.
  • Responsible for ensuring the reconciliation controls and monthly timetable are signed off In line with agreed dates
  • To assist in the reconciliation of interfaces
  • To support the Trust’s wider finance team and external departments in projects and developments relating to the Trust’s financial systems
  • To provide support to departmental managers and other finance staff.
  • To contribute towards the preparation of the Trust’s monthly accounts, annual accounts and financial returns
  • To give quality accounting support, taking account of statutory regulations, corporate governance and proper accounting records.
  • To ensure that financial controls are maintained within Corporate Governance guidelines.

Band 5

Salary range £29,970 - £36,483

Essential criteria
  • Diploma level of a professional accountancy qualification or equivalent experience
  • A good level of education in a numerate subject
  • Considerable experience in the finance department of a complex organisation
  • Knowledge of financial accounting procedures and standards with reference to Systems and Projects accounting and experience of year end/month end accounting processes
  • A good working knowledge of financial computer systems
  • Knowledge of the National Health Service and NHS Trusts in particular
  • Able to work autonomously to agreed objectives whilst given the freedom to instigate changes, working within broad occupational policies, without reference to Manager
  • Ability to make judgements involving facts and situations
  • Able to communicate complex information to a range of different audiences using a range of different communication methods
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced working knowledge of Excel and Word plus general ledger experience
  • Ability to lead a small team of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Studying towards professional accountancy qualification
  • Prince2 qualification or equivalent
  • Experience in project management
  • ECDL or equivalent experience
  • Previous NHS finance experience
  • Evidence of participation in continuing training and development
  • Knowledge of Power BI, VBA, SQL or other Programming Languages

Band 5 Criteria

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 5 or Association of Accounting Technician membership or certificate level of a professional accountancy (CCAB) qualification or equivalent experience
  • A good level of education in a numerate subject
  • Experience in the finance department of a complex organisation
  • Previous NHS Finance experience or a large complex organisation Able to work autonomously to manage own workload and change priorities as necessary to achieve key tasks, although with advice available if required
  • A good working knowledge of financial computer systems
  • Experience in the Finance Department of a busy organisation
  • A Detailed understanding of accounting procedures.
  • Knowledge of NHS and non-NHS legislation and how it effects own area of work.
  • Good communication, planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to be able to work independently and as part of a team to ensure strict deadlines are adhered to
  • Ability to understand NHS and non-NHS legislation how it affects own area of work
  • Good Computer literacy skills
Desirable criteria
  • Prince2 qualification or equivalent experience in project management
