Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated nurse who is passionate about lung cancer to join the hospital-based Lung Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team for 22.5 per week, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for 2 year fixed term.

Applications for this post are invited from nurses who have had some experience in either oncology and/or palliative care;  previous experience of a specialist nursing post would be beneficial. We are looking for an individual who is flexible, dynamic, self-motivated, reliable and is a good team player. You should also have a degree or be willing to develop your academic and clinic practice; committed to continuing education. You should uphold excellent communication skills. You will play an active part in clinical practice, education, research/audit and the implementation of national guidelines.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as part of a well-established dynamic multi-disciplinary team who provide specialist advice, holistic care and support to patients, their relatives and all members of the health care teams within the hospital.  You will be supported to manage a caseload of patients with specialist needs and support the development and evaluation of the Lung Cancer service to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-disciplinary framework.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be a passionate about lung cancer with excellent communication skills. The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team.

The post holder will work closely with the MDT team and other members of the service to coordinate and deliver a seamless service for lung patients receiving treatment

Ensure their role reflects the core components of the clinical nurse specialist which includes: clinical practice, management/organisation, education, research and audit, taking into account the national cancer agenda and its impact on service delivery

The post holder will work closely with the chemotherapy team and other members of the service to coordinate and deliver a seamless service for lung patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with current NMC Registration
  • Degree in Nursing or willing to complete
  • Evidence of current continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Lung Cancer module
  • Advanced Communications Skills training
  • Chemotherapy trained
  • Cancer care module

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant current experience in caring for cancer patients
  • Analytical and assessment skills
  • Experience in training and education of staff and patients
  • Experience working with patients having systemic anti cancer therapy treatment
Desirable criteria
  • Management of a team
  • Previous experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Experience of administering chemotherapy
