Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate, dynamic, and dedicated band 5 registered nurse to join our Acute Oncology and Haematology Assessment Unit. This is a fast-paced, specialist unit providing urgent assessment and treatment for patients experiencing complications related to cancer or it's treatment, as well as acute haematological conditions. The post holder will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients presenting with a wide range of acute oncology and haematology issues, including disease progression, and treatment related side effects.

You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients, while also providing emotional support and education to patients and their families. You will be expected to work efficiently under pressure, maintain clinical excellence, and uphold a compassionate approach in challenging situations.

This role offers excellent opportunities for professional development, with access to specialist training in oncology and haematology nursing. It’s ideal for nurses looking to enhance their skills in acute care within a highly supportive and innovative environment.

Main duties of the job

As a band 5 registered nurse on the Acute Oncology and Haematology Assessment Unit, your key responsibilities will include:

Providing high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals presenting with acute oncological or haematological conditions, including treatment-related complications such as neutropenic sepsis, metastatic spinal cord compression, and other urgent issues.

Carrying out rapid assessment, and prioritisation of patients on admission to the unit, using clinical judgement and established protocols.

Monitoring patients closely for clinical deterioration, escalating concerns promptly and working collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team to initiate timely interventions.

Maintaining accurate and timely documentation, ensuring all care is recorded clearly in-line with NMC and trust standards.

Supporting and educating patients and their families, providing clear information on treatment plans, symptom management, and on-going care needs.

Contributing to a positive team environment, supporting junior staff, and new team members through supervision and mentorship as appropriate.

Adhering to infection prevention and control procedures, particularly when managing immunocompromised patients, to ensure a safe care environment.

This role involves working closely with the medical team, physician's associates, clinical nurse specialists, and allied health professionals to ensure holistic care is delivered promptly and compassionately.
