An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre Team as a Surgical Training Programme Coordinator to support the management of surgical training programmes within the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre.  

The Newcastle Surgical Training Centre is a unique state of the art facility based at the Freeman Hospital, providing advanced cadaveric education to the medical profession.

Main duties of the job

·           To provide comprehensive advice and support within the NSTC for all surgical training Pathway

·           The post holder will ensure a smooth running of all surgical training pathway for regional and national Surgical trainees.

·           To lead the development and implementation of a programme which is safe and effective to ensure and maintain quality strategy.

·           An understanding of the NHS research and development (R&D) funding systems/costing models and the overarching NHS R&D strategy and governance framework

·           Liaising with course leads for planning and delivering Robotic Training Pathway, National Robotic Course, and all other Surgical Training Programmes.

·           Ensure educational and organisational goals are met and contribute to the development and implementation of the Pathway.

·           Maintain database of all the trainee details, access and monitor their progress remotely and in-person.

·           Liaise with HEENE and Industry to ensure curriculum requirements are being met.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Initiate and lead in the development and implementation of clinical audit and subsequent improvements to measure and enhance individual and team performance.
  • Demonstrate the ability to function competently as a manager, leader, and member of the multi-disciplinary team, understanding and acknowledging the role and function of other members of the team.
  • Liaising with the relevant Professional and Organisational links.
  • Develop, maintain, and participate in the delivery of a structured training programme.
  • Be wholly accountable for his/her own practice and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve the knowledge, skills and values required for safe, effective service delivery.
  • Evaluate and improve practice by leading in research where appropriate, including the implementation of findings.
  • Adhere to and implement local and national health and safety policy and procedures.
  • Participates in the risk management process

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Degree level qualification and Post Graduate Certificate, or experience within medical/surgical education management, or significant equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Post- graduate qualified to Certificate of Education, or comparable award.
  • Registered Theatre Nurse/ ODP

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience and specialist knowledge in the field of medical or surgical education pathways.
  • Computer literacy, together with a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Windows
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel to manage, process, report and deliver complex workforce information.
  • Understanding of educational training processes to meet the needs of a variety of staff groups
  • Comprehensive knowledge of training needs analysis
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts
  • Have excellent communication skills and be able to work to deadlines.
  • Ability to design and implement practical education data collection, education policies, procedures, and processes
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in the delivery / facilitation of training activities.
  • Previous experience of working within the NHS, or similar large, complex organisation.
  • Interest in new technology and willingness to become involved in technical set-up.
