The Region’s only Finance team dedicated to Clinical Research in the NHS is recruiting.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible professional to join our team as Research Finance Manager following the retirement of the previous postholder.
Newcastle Hospitals has a strong reputation worldwide for leading groundbreaking research in Healthcare with a vast portfolio of studies, we are in the top three commercial research study sites in the country. We manage circa £60 million of Clinical Research funding per annum across a complete spectrum of clinical specialties including research into the use of AI and cell therapy.
We are unique in the country having large infrastructure grants for the Biomedical Research Centre, Clinical Research Facility, Patient Safety Research Collaboration, Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre, hosting the Regional Research Delivery Network, as well as having a significant portfolio of NIHR funded research programmes.

Main duties of the job
The successful postholder will support the Assistant Finance Director and Clinical Board Finance Manager in all aspects of Research Finance:
- Act as the key contact for senior Finance and Research Delivery Management.
- Develop strong relationships with senior research delivery managers, providing advice and support on all finance aspects including identification of any risk.
- Optimise utilization of funding between commercial income, non-commercial income and designated grant sources.
- Oversee Month end and year end reporting for Research Delivery
- Preparation and submission of forecasts, budgets, and annual returns.
- Ensure Quarterly and annual reporting on infrastructure grants and research grants is complete, accurate and on time.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and reporting, and implementation.
- Support to Clinical Board Finance Manager for strategic work.
- Deputising for the Clinical Board Finance Manager and Assistant Finance Director.
- Lead and manage a team of finance staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Finance Manager - Research will lead in the provision of high quality financial information to the Assistant Finance Director, Clinical Board Finance Manager, Associate Director of Operations and Clinical Director, for both monthly management purposes and statutory reporting.
A knowledge of relevant accounting standards, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of research funding sources and mechanisms is required, and strong interpersonal and influencing skills to ensure utilization is optimized for the benefit of the Trust and its patients.
Supported by the Directorate Accountant for Research, you will also have responsibility for the day to day operation of the research delivery finance team of eight people.

- To deputise for the relevant Assistant Finance Director in aspects of the job.
- To ensure the provision of a high quality financial management service for all Trust Research and Development income (commercial and non-commercial) and expenditure. Provision of timely and accurate information to facilitate effective monitoring and management of the R&D financial position and to support the decision making process.
- To provide key input into the development of R&D financial reporting systems, with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of financial information provided
- To play a significant role in the formulation of the Trust’s financial plan.
- Ensure that financial controls are maintained within Corporate Governance guidelines.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Professional Accountancy qualification
- Significant post qualification experience (master’s level equivalent) in the finance department of a complex organisation
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- In depth specialist and practical knowledge of the NHS and Foundation Trust finance regime
- A good understanding of the NHS research and development (R&D) funding systems/costing models and the overarching NHS R&D strategy and governance framework
- Must have staff management/supervisory experience and the ability to plan and organise a range of complex activities and programmes
- A good working knowledge of financial computer systems
- Evidence of participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS Finance experience at a senior level
- ECDL or equivalent experience
- An in depth understanding of NHS Research Funding streams and the role of NIHR (National Institute for Health Research)

Essential criteria
- Able to work autonomously, interpreting national policy and regulations for the benefit of the Finance Directorate and the Trust
- Ability to make judgements involving highly complex facts and situations
- Able to communicate highly complex, sensitive or contentious information to a range of different audiences using a range of different communication methods
- The ability to communicate effectively and develop good working relationships with Consultants, Senior Managers and other Health Professionals within the Trust and external organisations (e.g. Newcastle University and The National Institute for Health Research)
- A flexible approach is required to fulfil the duties in an environment with ever changing and/or conflicting priorities
