This is a new less than full time post (8PA).

• To further develop general haematology and haemoglobinopthy services for the Trust in collaboration with colleagues in all disciplines including primary and tertiary care to provide an integrated and high quality service for patients. This will include ensuring that all services are provided in an effective and efficient manner and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times.

• To actively participate in the teaching and training of junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals in haematology.

• To take part in the general activities of consultants at the Trust – teaching, clinical governance, administration, management etc. This will be done by personal development into appropriate roles depending on the consultants’ particular interests and aptitudes.

 • To support and develop innovative improvements within the department and the Trust in order to maintain and improve the quality of patient care.

Main duties of the job

 Together with eight other Consultants, this post holder will provide a clinical and laboratory haematology service for the populations of Coventry and Rugby. 

 As part of the consortium of 14-15 consultants working at three Trusts (including South Warwickshire University Foundation Trust (SWFT) and George Eliot Hospital Trust (GEH)), the post holder will participate in the “Countywide”, on call rota, which provides advice to all Acute and Community services in Coventry and Warwickshire, the “COW” (consultant of the week) attending rota, covering intensive inpatient work on ward 34 and take a share of overnight on call.

 

The post holder will share leadership of services for patients with red cell disorders and development of the services for these patients (see specific aims below). They will also share the laboratory haemoglobinopathy screening service for Coventry and Warwickshire.

 

Candidates should have completed the approved Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) curriculum in Haematology or be able to show (to an Advisory Appointments Committee) evidence of equivalence in knowledge, training and experience in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology practice.

 They should hold Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.

 Applicants should also hold both FRCPath and MRCP or equivalent qualifications.
