Consultant in Orthodontics

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Welcome to Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and thank you for your interest.

In addition to receiving tertiary referrals from across the South East of England, we have a network  of ‘spoke’ sites at district general hospitals enabling our consultants to offer their expertise with routine treatments and consultations as close to patients’ homes as is possible. With the recent addition of video led ‘virtual’ consultations we also enable patients who have some distance to travel to avoid the additional stress and worry of a long journey.

Working at QVH combines the excitement, challenge and career opportunities of many larger organisations with the satisfaction of delivering excellent patient care that really does re-build our patients’ lives.

We also offer attractive benefits such as

  • tailored personal development to support career aspirations, including accredited clinical and management development programmes
  • flexible working arrangements for a work-life balance that suits you and your needs
  • a dedicated reward programme, offering a range of national and local discounts, cashback and tax relief schemes

Sustainability

At Queen Victoria Hospital we want to be the first Net Zero Hospital in England, and to achieve that wants every member of staff to be a green champion.  The way in which the Trust works has a significant impact on the organisation’s carbon footprint and that of our patients. From the heat, light and power supplies within the hospital to avoiding unnecessary patient journeys, the Trust is empowering all staff to create a sustainable health and care environment for future generations. The Trust expects all staff to reuse and recycle more, to use energy and water efficiently, to walk or cycle to work if you can, and to have a focus on sustainability in the workplace.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive post as Consultant Orthodontist based at the Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead. This is a replacement post, but one that has been updated to meet the demands of the workload and to offer the successful candidate a job that will be challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.

The post is most suitable for a candidate who has successfully completed (or is about to complete) specialist orthodontic training at both the basic postgraduate and the higher, post CCST level.

The post holder will have an active role in teaching as well as treating complex cases and will have the opportunity to be mentored, by experienced colleagues to settle you into your new role and to enable you to truly meet your aspirations. You will work both with maxillofacial surgical and orthodontic colleagues on multidisciplinary clinics.

About the Working Pattern

The post attracts 7.6 PAs – 6.1 DCC and 1.5 SPA - with working days on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Although the job plan may evolve in future to meet the demands of this expanding service, the successful candidate will have an exciting job that has a good balance of the varying and different aspects of consultant working.

Main duties of the job

The Queen Victoria Hospital has a national and international reputation for clinical quality as well as for being a high-quality training centre. The Orthodontic Department provides a specialist service for an extensive range of patients, including those with severe dental and skeletal malocclusions, cleft lip and palate, complex dentoalveolar anomalies and other facial anomalies, providing around 15,000 outpatient attendances per year.

The department is a major centre for Orthognathic surgery carrying out in excess of  200 Osteotomies per year and the post-holder will be involved in these joint clinics as well as with minor oral surgical clinics too. Orthognathic surgical cases are supported by excellent laboratory facilities including 3D planning.

Multidisciplinary clinics are also held with Restorative Consultants, and this service is evolving to meet the needs of new ways of working. Our team has excellent relations with the Sleep Studies Unit at QVH and we provide active care for patients who benefit from this exciting clinical area of clinical care.

We work with an electronic patient record system, digital imaging, 3D study models as well as Dolphin orthodontic planning software. Dental radiographic facilities are excellent including the usual 2D imaging modalities and we also have a busy 3D CBCT service too. Medical Photography services are also provided on site.
