Consultant Ophthalmologist - specialist in Glaucoma and Medical Retina
We are looking to appoint an innovative and high performing Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Glaucoma and Medical Retina, providing sub-specialty out-patient clinics and oversee a non-medical injection service.
CHFTs Glaucoma Service consists of specialist complex clinics, glaucoma standard including virtual review clinics, Optometry led new patient clinics and trained technician diagnostic clinics. Orthoptists, Nurse Practitioners and ACPs also hold glaucoma qualifications and lead IOP Check and Compliance clinics.
The Glaucoma Service runs on 2-stop diagnostics and virtual or face to face review model. Due to the digital maturity of the Trust, virtual reviews can be undertaken off-site to allow for flexible working (work-life balance) and most efficient use of clinical estate within the hospital footprint. Dedicated diagnostics suite for Glaucoma
For those patients requiring laser treatment, lasers for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, YAG laser and most recently Micropulse are available in out-patient settings.
For those patients requiring surgery, theatre staff are very familiar with techniques of cyclodiode laser and most recently I-Stent.
The medical retina service continues to transform and initiate new models and pathways of care to meet the needs of the local population by implementing best practice.
Main duties of the job
To provide specialist Consultant Led out-patient medical retina clinics:
- Macular
- RVO
- DMO
- Stable macular virtual clinics
-Support sub-speciality clinics where appropriate
-Support Emergency clinics where appropriate
It is expected that the post-holder will able to deliver on all degrees of disease management (including Glaucoma elective and acute surgery).
To provide teaching and education to trainees, Trust doctors, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Nurse practitioners to enhance future models of care and expansion within the specialty.
Opportunity to work with service leads to conduct service improvement, transformation and research.
Opportunity to provide emergency on-call and cataract surgery depending on experience.

CHFT has 2 main sites, Ophthalmology being based in Acre Mills Out-patients, Huddersfield and Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax.
The Trust is currently one of the most digitised NHS Trusts in the country having moved to Cerner Millennium Electronic Patient Records (EPR) in 2017. This makes us currently one of the most paper-light and digitised Ophthalmology Departments in the country including the use of Medisight by all clinical teams, and our planned/on-going work will make us a national leader in this area.

Experience and Achievements

- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
- Evidence of extensive experience and training in assessing and treating patients in General Ophthalmology / on-call settings and MR sub-specialties
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of experience in planning and / or managing MR services including injection service
- Understanding current issues within Ophthalmology and the future direction of the specialty
- Attendance at a recognised management course
- Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Ophthalmology
- Evidence of experience in planning and / or managing a Glacucoma services including injection service
Teaching and training
Essential criteria
- Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
Desirable criteria
- Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
