SENIOR CLINICAL FELLOW IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE (ST3 level equivalent)
NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow
Be part of our future landscape
At Airedale, we are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. We actively encourage applications irrespective of people’s age, lived experience of living with a disability or long-term conditions, gender, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or other personal circumstances.
Increasing our diversity and supporting our organisation to be more inclusive is a key priority here at Airedale and our teams are at the centre of how we work towards this.
We appreciate all people may have diverse and individual needs and we pride ourselves on supporting all people to thrive and flourish at work. We have frameworks in place that support reasonable adjustments and flexible working for colleagues throughout their working lives which starts at recruitment.
These are exciting times for Airedale. We have the once-in-a-career opportunity to be involved in the planning and building of a completely new hospital here on our Steeton site by 2030. By joining us now you’ll be a key part of our journey over the next few years, with the chance to input into a state-of-the-art, modern healthcare facility that will deliver care to our communities for decades to come. We are also on the journey to a new electronic patient record, part of our wider ambition for our digital future – a future that builds on our significant telemedicine and digital care success. Ultimately, what makes Airedale special is our people. Not just our staff, but our volunteers, patients, visitors, and wider population who make up the Airedale family. This is a Trust that sits at the heart of our community, and our communities are very proud of their Trust.
Job overview
Applications are invited for ST3-level posts on a dedicated CT3 rota in the Emergency Department at Airedale Hospital. These posts will increase our ED staffing levels, improve patient care, and also provide an ideal opportunity for doctors experienced in emergency medicine to gain ST3-level experience as a perfect stepping stone to a full middle grade (ST4+) post. These posts would be ideally suited to a candidate who has completed Acute Care Common Stem training or has equivalent experience and competence and wishes to gain further experience before becoming an ST4+ level middle grade doctor. After working for a year as an ST3-level doctor in the ED at Airedale, we envisage post holders then stepping up onto our ST4+ level middle grade tier and will be happy to help you work towards CESR. Our department prides itself on being friendly and supportive and has an excellent reputation amongst trainees (we received the highest combined ratings from West Yorkshire EM trainees in the GMC survey 2021 and 2022).
Main duties of the job
This fixed term post is ideally suited to candidates at the level of ST3 equivalent who are looking to expand their experience and develop their clinical skills prior to taking up a Higher Specialist Training post or a Specialty Doctor post (ST4+ level) in Emergency Medicine. Post holders will work alongside consultants and middle grade doctors to provide high quality emergency care. Consultants are on-duty from 0800-0000 and there is always at least one ST4+ level middle grade on duty. The rota will incorporate 6 ST3-level doctors working a combination of day and night shifts with some evening shifts also. The jobs will also include non-clinical time that the post holder can use to gain experience in areas such as teaching, quality improvement and pursue any special interests.
Our expectations of you would be that you will:
- Have already completed at least 4 years postgraduate experience equivalent to Foundation Training and ACCS training. Previous NHS experience would be a definite advantage.
- Be able to act at ST3 level and provide support to junior colleagues
- Have full GMC registration and a licence to practice; please do not apply unless you have FULL GMC registration
- Have ideally successfully completed MRCEM and are working towards FRCEM or at least planning to.
- Have a PLAB certificate if required
- Have evidence of right to work in the UK if applicable
- Participate in the ST3 rota including nights and weekends
Working for our organisation
Our award winning hospital is positioned at the gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales affording the opportunity to live and work in a stunning part of the country with good schools and easy access to Leeds in less than an hour and London in approximately 3 hours. In addition, Craven district (part of the hospital catchment area) has recently been named as the best place to live in the UK. Airedale is a medium sized, friendly acute general hospital and community Foundation Trust. We are proud to be an associated teaching hospital of Leeds School of Medicine; we provide clinical placements in a wide range of specialties for doctors in training from foundation to specialist trainee level and we are host employer for the Airedale GP Training Programme. The new Emergency Department was opened in 2014, costing just over £6 million. The department is modern and spacious and includes a 4-bed resuscitation room (1 dedicated paediatric bay) plus 18 treatment rooms including an eye/ENT room. There is also an adjacent minor injury unit that post holders will be able to gain experience in with funding recently approved to expand to become a co-located Urgent Treatment Centre. There are separate paediatric and adult waiting areas, and an observation area with long ranging views over the Yorkshire countryside. The department sees approximately 70,000-75,000 patients a year including adults and children. We have Trauma Unit status within the Yorkshire Major Trauma network.
