Job overview
This is a key role within the Trusts Information Services team, responsible for working with Trust Joint Venture partnerships in the provide comprehensive analytics, insights, and intelligence.
This position involves the extraction, analysis, and interpretation of data to support decision-making processes and improve operational efficiency within the NHS.
The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of healthcare data, and the ability to communicate complex information effectively. A background in health informatics, data science, or a related field, along with experience in the NHS or healthcare sector, is highly desirable. This role is pivotal in driving data-informed decision-making and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the NHS.

Main duties of the job
- Develop and implement robust data analytics frameworks to monitor and evaluate performance metrics related to operational delivery, service level agreements and transformation and innovation projects.
- Collaborate with partners and operational teams to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and trends. Provide actionable insights that inform strategic planning and operational improvements.
- Support initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and safety by analysing data and facilitating the implementation of best practices across the organisation.
- Work closely with finance teams to understand and optimise processes to ensure efficient and effective data flows and reporting to ensure sustainable financial management.
- Design, develop, test and make available information solutions for the automatic creation and presentations of reports and dashboards
- Extract and manipulate complex and extremely varied data from different SQL databases for reporting and analysis

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Develop and establish data pipelines from source systems to the Trust data warehouse including all elements of extract, transform and load processes using appropriate tools
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including clinical staff, management, and regulatory bodies, to ensure alignment of data initiatives with organisational goals.
- Play a key role in preparing reports and documentation required for regulator inspections. This includes compiling evidence of compliance, such as audit results, patient feedback, and quality improvement initiatives, to demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to meeting regulatory standards.
- Ensure adherence to data governance standards and compliance with relevant regulations, including data protection and confidentiality requirements.
- Establish and maintain regular communication with key stakeholders from within supported Operational Divisions to discuss reporting requirements and progress against other deliverables
- Manage the Information Services Change Process for the respective Operational Division and facilitate the prioritisation of work requests
- Represent Information Services at key business meetings to promote the services of the team and obtain feedback on the quality of said services
- Provide reporting related subject matter expertise on key business / IT development projects and undertake business analysis of new requirements resulting from such work
- Review the efficiency of internal processes and associated technology solutions, identify and implement improvement opportunities
- Present reporting and analysis to appropriate boards and committees
- Support the Senior Information Manager and Head of Performance and Information in the development of the Information Services Strategy and any major internal projects
- Provide cover for the Divisional Information Manager of other Operational Divisions as and when required
- Deputise for the Senior Information Manager and Head of Performance and Information as and when requested

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent qualification / experience relevant to the work undertaken within NHS Foundation Trust Information Services Team
Desirable criteria
- Masters level in mathematics/statistics or equivalent experience/knowledge
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- In-depth specialist knowledge of NHS Information Standards and how these apply to the regulatory / contractual frameworks of a Foundation Trust
- Detailed knowledge of the clinical services / patient pathways within an acute setting and the associated information demands of each
- Knowledge of key information issues within the NHS including the commissioning process, Payment by Results, Information Governance and performance management
- Knowledge of the NHS England’s Information Strategy and how it applies in a Foundation Trust setting.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of the clinical coding process and the derivation of Healthcare Resource Groups (HRGs)
- Understanding of the annual Reference Cost and National Payment Systems processes
Skills
Essential criteria
- Specific / in-depth knowledge of SQL, Microsoft Excel, Reporting Services and PowerBI
- Competent in the user of data transformation tools including python, SQL Serber Integration Services
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to present complex issues to a range of target audiences
Desirable criteria
- Working understanding of SQL Server Integration Services and Analytical Services
- Working understanding of data warehouse design and underlying data structures
Experience
Essential criteria
- Line management of a small team of information analysts within a NHS Foundation Trust
- Specialist experience of statistical / analytical techniques applied within an NHS Foundation Trust setting
- Extensive experience of extracting, collating and presenting information from different systems
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within an Acute Trust
- Previous NHS experience
- Experience of SystmOne
