Job overview
Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Main interest Obstetrics)
This post provides an opportunity to pursue a specialist interest in
preterm antenatal, obstetrics governance and maternal medicine at
Airedale Hospital which is situated between the spectacular
Yorkshire Dales and the cosmopolitan centres of Bradford and
Leeds.
Our award-winning hospital is also in an award-winning location
providing genuine opportunities for a great work-life balance.
Yorkshire has recently been voted as the third best region in the
world by Lonely Planet, and our local towns of Skipton and Ilkley
have been voted as the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday
Times, commending their top-class schools, great transport links.
This is a dynamic department, and the successful applicant will be
required to contribute to ongoing service development. We expect
involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and also
welcome ideas for new work streams. We strongly encourage

Main duties of the job
This is a new post, and the successful applicant will join a
department of 11 consultants.
Obstetric facilities based at Airedale General Hospital include
inpatient and outpatient maternity services. Over 2000 babies are
delivered at Airedale Hospital each year.
Antenatal services are predominantly provided within the maternity
unit at Airedale Hospital with 61% of women booked as high-risk
requiring consultant led antenatal services during 2018/19.
A consultant will also still lead on the delivery of a planned midwife led
pathway if complications were to arise during pregnancy.
The obstetrics and gynaecology medical workforce is currently
comprised of 11 consultants and 1 associate specialists who provide
essential patient led services.
Airedale General Hospital work jointly with other local NHS providers
in the region, including Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust and Bradford District Care Trust, to help ensure we can deliver
a patient led collaborative service and thereby promoting a culture of
safety and improvement
Working for our organisation
Labour Ward with 8 delivery rooms, four of these are in the
midwifery led unit and 4 in the consultant led side. We have a
dedicated obstetric theatre with a resident obstetric anaesthetist and
consultant anaesthetist on call. The birth rate is currently over 2200
deliveries per annum.
Obstetric Ward a 15-bed ward for antenatal and postnatal
patients.
Antenatal Clinic with 2 consulting rooms and four examination
rooms and Ultrasound scanning facility.
Maternity Assessment Unit (MAC) open 6 days a
week, adjacent to Labour ward.
Special Care currently 12 consultant paediatricians, intensive
care cots, management from 26 weeks gestation. Links with
Regional Cot Bureau.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
CONSULTANTS JOB PLAN
Job Planning will be based on a partnership approach. Consultants
are asked to prepare a draft job plan which is then discussed and
agreed with the Clinical Director and then presented to the Medical
Scrutiny Committee for approval.
Job plans will list all the NHS and any private duties of the consultant, the number of Programmed Activities for which the Consultant is contracted and paid, the consultant’s objectives and agreed supporting resources.
The duties and responsibilities set out in a Job Plan will include, as
appropriate:
• Direct Clinical Care duties including on-call work
• Supporting Professional Activities
• Additional NHS responsibilities – determined against the agreed
Trust tariff allocation
• External duties
The Trust’s strategy is to increase the use of its capital resources
e.g. Theatre, Endoscopy and OPC to facilitate increased productivity
and efficiencies which supports the growth of market share and
business development.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Full GMC Registration
- • MRCOG or equivalent
- • Training & experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT
- • Entry onto the Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology or within 6 months of CCT date at interview
Desirable criteria
- MD or higher degree
Experience

- Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
- Evidence of having undertaken audit work that has brought about change
- Evidence of experience and commitment to the speciality
- Advance Labour ward ATSM or equivalent
- Ability to offer an expert on and appropriate expertise in obstetric care
Desirable criteria
- Simulation training
- Experience in role as an education supervisor
- Formal training in teaching
- Published research in peer reviewed journal
