Job overview

We are excited to be able to offer this newly developed permanent post working on an inpatient basis on the Stroke Unit (also treating other neurological conditions) at Airedale General Hospital. This position is part of a strategic development to expand the Therapies team offer for both the patients and MDT of the ward. This is the ideal post for an enthusiastic and inventive Psychologist, with skills in establishing new service provisions, and is interested in working alongside other professionals in order to support patients and their families. 

 

The postholder will primarily work on the inpatient ward at Airedale Hospital,but will have key relationships with established psychology posts within the community stroke team and neuropsychology outpatients. The post holder will be expected to deliver compassionate and skilled psychological care to patients on the neurology ward. In addition to direct therapy work, there will be the need to work closely with nurses, rehab assistants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech language therapists and medical staff, supporting the development of psychological care within the specialties. The role will involve some supervision, teaching, training, and consultation to the team. Service-evaluation and audit will also be an important and valued element of the role. The role could be offered as a Band 8a / 8b preceptorship.

 

 

Main duties of the job

This is a very exciting opportunity for an experienced Neuropsychologist to implement a high-quality specialist clinical neuropsychology service on the Stroke Unit at Airedale General Hospital. The post holder will take a specialist lead clinical role in continuing the development of the Stroke Psychology Service, with the post-holder’s equivalent in the Community Stroke Service.

The post-holder will work closely with the stroke multidisciplinary team to provide highly specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment, formulation and therapy, taking full professional responsibility and exercising completely autonomous judgement, in matters of professional practice.

In addition, the post-holder will have strategic oversight of the implementation, evaluation and measurement of the development of the inpatient stroke psychology service & will offer consultation, advice and disseminate psychological ideas to the wider stroke MDT.

Additionally, the post holder will contribute to the general management, governance and supervision of the wider Clinical Health Psychology Service as agreed. The post-holder will work autonomously in the execution of these duties and within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the Clinical Health Psychology Department and Trust policies and procedures

The post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of Adult Neuropsychology, and will also have considerable scope to develop the role in response to changing demands and opportunities as they arise. The post holder will be very well supported through clinical and professional supervision, ongoing relationships with counterparts in other neuropsychology specialties and will be a valued member of the wider Healthcare Psychology team

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate Doctoral level training in clinical psychologsychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapy (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of ps and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Further specialist training in the assessment and treatment of neurological disorders presenting with the full range of clinical severity through formal post - doctoral training (diploma or equivalent) or a combination of specialist short courses together with an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice based learning as assessed by an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equivalent level to a postgraduate diploma
  • Completion of formal training in clinical supervision.
  • HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist
  • Substantial experience working in an inpatient setting

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and threat of physical abuse
  • Substantial experience working as a qualified clinical psychologist, with experience at senior psychologist level and substantial experience in Neuropsychology
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment
  • Experience of teaching, training and of providing clinical supervision to psychologists and other healthcare professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with patients who have had a stoke
  • Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
  • Experience of contributing directly to the processes of service development and policy implementation
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
