Consultant Stroke Physician

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Be part of our future landscape

At Airedale, we are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. We actively encourage applications irrespective of people’s age, lived experience of living with a disability or long-term conditions, gender, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or other personal circumstances.

Increasing our diversity and supporting our organisation to be more inclusive is a key priority here at Airedale and our teams are at the centre of how we work towards this.

We appreciate all people may have diverse and individual needs and we pride ourselves on supporting all people to thrive and flourish at work. We have frameworks in place that support reasonable adjustments and flexible working for colleagues throughout their working lives which starts at recruitment.

These are exciting times for Airedale.  We have the once-in-a-career opportunity to be involved in the planning and building of a completely new hospital here on our Steeton site by 2030.  By joining us now you’ll be a key part of our journey over the next few years, with the chance to input into a state-of-the-art, modern healthcare facility that will deliver care to our communities for decades to come. We are also on the journey to a new electronic patient record, part of our wider ambition for our digital future – a future that builds on our significant telemedicine and digital care success. Ultimately, what makes Airedale special is our people. Not just our staff, but our volunteers, patients, visitors, and wider population who make up the Airedale family. This is a Trust that sits at the heart of our community, and our communities are very proud of their Trust.

Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a passionate, dynamic and
forward-thinking stroke team at a pivotal and genuinely exciting time for
Airedale. We are strengthening our collaboration with Bradford to
deliver a robust, sustainable and truly integrated stroke service for our
local population—creating a model that is both innovative and
future-proof.

We are recruiting a third Consultant to join the team, as one of our
valued colleagues transitions to reduced hours through a
retire-and-return arrangement. You will therefore play a crucial role in
enhancing capacity, strengthening resilience, and driving continued
service development.

We recognise that Consultants thrive when they can pursue their
specialist interests. As part of this role, there may be opportunities to
develop and deliver additional specialist services depending on your
skills and aspirations—these could include:

• Neurology
• Neuro-rehabilitation
• Elderly Medicine

We are committed to supporting you to grow, innovate and shape the
service around what you do best.

Main duties of the job

Our team works across two sites, giving our clinicians broad exposure
and the opportunity to work across the full continuum of stroke care:

• Bradford Royal Infirmary – providing hyperacute stroke services for
our population.
• Airedale General Hospital – home to our acute stroke and stroke
rehabilitation services.

This is a 10PA role, but we warmly welcome applicants seeking less
than full-time opportunities. What is essential is participation in the
1-in-6 on-call rota for our thrombolysis service.

• Work collaboratively within a strong multidisciplinary team, including
specialist nurses, therapists and colleagues from across medical
specialties, to deliver safe, person-centred stroke care.
• Offer expert input into inpatient referrals from other medical wards,
including the Acute Assessment Unit, ensuring timely and
appropriate clinical decision-making.
• Provide clinical supervision and support to Resident Doctors and
other junior medical staff, contributing to their development,
education and wellbeing.
• Participate actively in clinical governance, including audit, quality
improvement, morbidity and mortality processes, and service
development initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service
sustainability.
• Meet professional registration requirements, including full GMC
registration with a current Licence to Practice, and entry on the
Specialist Register (or within six months of achieving CCT/equivalent
at the time of interview).

Working for our organisation

Airedale NHS Foundation Trust is a place where innovation thrives,
collaboration is instinctive, and our ambition for the future is matched
only by our commitment to exceptional patient care. As a Trust with a
strong track record of pioneering developments—such as our
nationally recognised telemedicine services supporting prisons and
nursing homes—we continue to push boundaries to deliver
high-quality, accessible care to the people of Airedale, Wharfedale
and Craven.

We know that the landscape of healthcare is changing. The
increasing diversity of need, the shift from episodic care to
population-based health, and the challenges set out in the NHS Long
Term Plan require new ways of thinking and working. At Airedale, we
are meeting these challenges head-on by embracing integrated
approaches with our partners, strengthening pathways, and
remaining steadfast in our focus on safety, quality, and patient
experience.

Our ability to shape a successful future depends on attracting
talented, compassionate clinicians who want to make a genuine
difference. We’re looking for a Stroke Consultant who brings fresh
perspectives, values teamwork, and is both ambitious and humble—
someone who will contribute meaningfully to our transformation while
learning from the experience and expertise of those around them.
