Directorate General Manager – Medicine

Are you a dynamic and experienced leader looking for an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in patient care and service delivery? We are seeking a DGM for Medicine to join our leadership team at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This pivotal role will provide strategic, operational, and performance management across a broad range of clinical and managerial services, with a particular emphasis on delivering waiting time targets and continuous improvements in patient care and experience.

As the DGM, you will be responsible for strategic, operational, and performance management, including service quality, planning, resource utilisation, and modernisation.  Working to ensure the achievement of waiting time targets and other key performance measures whilst driving continuous improvements in patient access and care. In this role, you will also hold responsibility for speciality workforce, finance and performance delivery in partnership with clinical and multidisciplinary leads.

Main duties of the job

You will be a key member of the Hospital Management Team, contributing to corporate planning and performance management arrangements. A collaborative mindset will be essential, as you will work closely with primary, community, and secondary care services to ensure seamless patient pathways and efficient service delivery. Operating with a high degree of responsibility, you will identify and translate health service policy and strategy into actionable plans within the performance management framework. In addition, you will manage a dedicated team of staff, ensuring the delivery of operational, financial, performance, and activity targets

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

To succeed in this role, you will have extensive managerial experience in a healthcare setting, ideally within an NHS or similarly complex environment. You will possess a proven track record in strategic leadership, service improvement, and performance management, along with a strong operational knowledge across HR, finance, governance, and clinical service delivery.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, allowing you to engage and influence at all levels, from frontline teams to Hospital Directors. You will be driven to improve patient care, enhance service standards, and foster a culture of efficiency and high-quality outcomes. Demonstrable ability to manage change and modernisation initiatives effectively is crucial, as is the commitment and vision to embed health service policy and strategy into local operations and deliver tangible outcomes.

Essential criteria
  • Post Graduate Degree in relevant subject
  • Evidence of ongoing Professional/Managerial Development
  • Managerial Qualification
  • Professional / Managerial development in relevant area to masters equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Masters in management or equivalent.

Experience

  • Project management experience
  • Experience of implementing innovations and managing change within clinical environments – multi site
  • Substantial experience of operating effectively at a senior level within the organisation.
  • Experience of clinical audit and implementation of actions
  • Experience of multi professional working at a senior level / working effectively with other stakeholders
  • Substantial budget management service
  • Operational management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in unscheduled care and scheduled care
  • Site Management (minimum 8a)
