Job overview

The Royal Berkshire Hospital is delighted to offer a Royal College of Surgeons England approved Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Fellowship. It has a multidisciplinary focus involving ENT Surgeons, Oncologists, Endocrinologists, Radiologists and Pathologists. Its aim is to provide comprehensive training in the medical and surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disease. Potential candidates should be senior ENT/Otolaryngology trainees who are looking to enhance their expertise prior to commencing a career as a consultant.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will also be responsible to teach junior doctors and nurses during ward rounds, outpatient clinics, emergency situations and operating sessions. Fellows will join the on-call rota and will also undertake general Head and Neck ENT outpatient clinics.

There are also opportunities for exposure to transoral thyroid surgery, laryngology, salivary gland disease, diagnostic head and neck cancer work and facial plastic surgery. We encourage fellows to visit neighbouring and allied units to observe alternative practice.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to manage and offer expert opinion on wide range of complex elective and acute / emergency problems within specialty
  • Ability to take on full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients, including management of complications from surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of UK higher specialist training or other equivalent in ENT, General, Endocrine or Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Experience of managing an ENT service

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels & ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with patients, carers, GPs and other members of the multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in developing new procedures
  • Experience of managing an ENT service
