Job overview
The purpose of this post is to support clinical demand of the instruments/ equipment including hand pieces to ensure the smooth and efficient service delivery of the departments, maintaining cross-infection prevention protocols, and Health and Safety procedures.
The post is a split role depending on the service need which can vary from week to week (or between term time and University holidays) the role will generally consist of a larger proportion of clinical tasks (80%) backed up by a smaller proportion of administrative tasks (20%).
Main duties of the job
To ensure that equipment & instruments are readily available for clinical departments as required/ requested. Store and distribute sterile medical/dental instruments and equipment to departments within Birmingham Dental Hospital.
To support the delivery (receiving/ checking/ returning) of instruments including accurate record keeping of the equipment as per decontamination provider policies and protocols using IT skills for scanning and defect reporting, under the guidance of Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader.
Support the Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader with the delivery of returned equipment is fit for purpose, identifying any that have been labelled as being defected or contaminated, escalating to Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader when required.
Participate in activities related to receiving instrument packs from departments and reporting/replacing any deficiencies. Maintain sufficient supply of instruments to replace missing/damaged items. Report equipment / instruments for repair to team leader.
Monitoring levels of equipment available for clinical areas and identifying when there is likely to be a shortfall. In such instances there would be a requirement to escalate to the Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader for resolution.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To work in accordance with departmental policy, instructions and quality, delivery management systems providing feedback where required

Support sterile and non-sterile stock to minimise wastage under the guidance of Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader when required.
Participate in activities related to receiving instrument packs from departments and reporting/replacing any deficiencies. Maintain sufficient supply of instruments to replace missing/damaged items. Report equipment / instruments for repair to team leader.
Responsible for checking all trays and supplementary items, ensuring all local SOPs are being adhered to.
Monitoring levels of equipment available for clinical areas and identifying when there is likely to be a shortfall. In such instances there would be a requirement to escalate to the Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader for resolution.
Support with monitoring of general queries from students to ensure decontamination protocols are followed, under the guidance of team leader as necessary.
Ensure correct disposal of used items following Universal Safety Precautions and Infection Prevention policies
Working areas should be maintained to a very high standard at all times ensuring compliance with all Infection, Prevention and Control policies.
To support, organise and participate in training and education to the dental students and nursing staff in the dispensary/clinical areas on safe use of equipment & instruments.
To support & work in collaboration with Senior Dental Nursing & Dental Nurse Manager to facilitate & support local service needs including any challenges.
To work as part of the multidisciplinary team
Escalate any stock levels issues within departments to Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader & the Decontamination Manager.
Clinical Duties
The post holder will support the Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader to organise and participate in the collection of instruments.
The post holder will support the team with the distribution of sterile/non-sterile instruments between clinical departments.
They will provide a supporting role to the dental students and nursing staff in the clinical areas as required.
The post holder will be responsible for hand pieces instruments assurance and reporting to Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader and the Decontamination Manager.
Assurance & Quality improvement on Instrument management e.g. Hand Pieces.
Non-Clinical Duties
The post holder will support the team leader with stock / resources to the departments including an oversight of stock consumables.
The post holder may have to deputise for continued service delivery in the absence of Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader as required directed by the Decontamination Manager and subject to clinical demands impact.
Quality and Audits
Support new quality improvement initiatives related to decontamination & instruments and support in the implementation of improvement measure
Support in ensuring that all services are delivered in accordance with statutory requirements, legislation and national best practice.
Assist with regular stock audits ensuring an accurate and up-to-date record of all equipment is maintained.
To undertake/ assist with specified audits and inspections as directed and report back to Decontamination & Equipment Team Leader / Decontamination Manager.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade C and above or equivalent
- NVQ Level 3 in a Health and Social Care Related subject or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in Technical Certificate in Decontamination as part of the Institute of Decontamination Science
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of working within a decontamination environment or instrument handling
- Experience of working within and to Infection Prevention and Control guidance
Skills/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to manually handle equipment/materials to and from trolleys
- Good organisational skills
- IT Skills – a good working knowledge of all Microsoft packages particularly Excel
- Ability to undertake audits in a healthcare setting environment.
