Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and continuous improvement of the ATIMP trials pharmacy service, aligning with Trust strategy, research priorities, and national initiatives to support innovation and growth.

Manage a portfolio of ATIMP trials from feasibility to close-out, including protocol review, logistics planning, site initiation, and post-trial obligations.

Oversee receipt, cryogenic storage, chain-of-identity/custody, preparation, dispensing, and administration of ATIMPs, ensuring validated processes, segregation, traceability, and compliance with GCP, MHRA, and Trust SOPs.

Act as pharmacy lead for audits, sponsor visits, and MHRA inspections, ensuring robust documentation and inspection readiness.

Provide advanced clinical input into patient pathways, develop prescribing guidelines, and support risk assessments for novel therapies.

Build workforce capability through structured training, competency frameworks, and education programs.

Drive service improvement initiatives, monitor KPIs, and implement CAPAs to enhance safety and efficiency.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, sponsors, CROs, and national networks to deliver the Trust’s ATIMP strategy, influence policy, and share best practice.

Contribute to research, publications, and innovation projects to advance ATIMP delivery and improve patient outcomes.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MPharm or equivalent degree in pharmacy
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Clinical Pharmacy or Independent prescriber
Desirable criteria
  • Registration with Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • GCP training
  • Leadership and management course

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in hospital pharmacy (Post-Registration)
  • Experience of developing and implementing service changes
  • Experience of audit and implementation of change
  • Have a sound knowledge of legislation, national standards and good practice around medication supply, storage and prescribing/use
  • Understand the background and aims of current healthcare policy
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in providing specialist pharmacist review of people with cancer
  • Experience in working with Clinical trials in any capacity
  • Experience of developing business cases

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to analyse highly complex data relating to medication use and present in a way that actions and follow-up can be identified
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
  • Ability to analyse highly complex facts and situations and develop a range of options
  • Able to make decisions on difficult issues where there may be number of courses of action
  • Ability to anticipate and resolve problems before they arise

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledgeable in clinical pharmacy
  • Knowledgeable in commonly used software such as Excel and Word
  • Able to demonstrate competence to maintain own CPD portfolio and identifies and meets own training needs
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledgeable in clinical and technical aspects of ATIMP management and provision
  • Understanding of Clinical Trials legislation
  • Understanding of National Clinical Trials policy and practice
  • Knowledge of clinical research and its role in pharmacy and medicine
  • Knowledge of GMP processes
  • Experience in the use of e-prescribing systems within trials
  • Experience of protocol building validation with an e-prescribing system
