Job overview

Are you passionate about supporting patients recovery and rehabilitation following traumatic injury or orthopaedic surgery? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 5 or an established band 6 Physiotherapist to join the Trauma and Orthopaedic team at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.

Through this role, you will provide specialist clinical knowledge and support to therapy, nursing and medical teams with the management of T&O patients, demonstrating critical thinking, evidenced based care and clinical decision making to ensure compliance to local and national targets and guidelines. Along with the clinical component this role, you will also take a leading role in the supervision of Junior Therapists, Students and Therapy Support workers in the team.

Individual support and development is essential in creating a rewarding work place environment.  As a Trust, we ensure that your professional and academic needs, as well as your personal development and wellbeing are prioritised. We achieve this through a structured supervision programme, access to both local and external training opportunities and regular team training.

As a service, we aspire to continually improve and develop the service we provide to patients and are looking for someone who has a keen interest in service development. A proven record of successful service development is a desirable quality for someone looking to apply for this role.

Main duties of the job

Within this post you will be expected to:
Provide high quality, safe and evidence based Physiotherapy intervention to in-patients across the T&O service, including early supported discharge planning.

Hold responsibility for own caseload and be responsible for a defined area of service or caseload, working without direct supervision. Supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review and case conferences.
Undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner.

Line manage Band 5 Therapists and and Therapy Support Workers.

Supervise and educate undergraduate Therapy Students and assess their performance as required to ensure their standard of practice and knowledge meets the standards set by the degree level qualification.

Undertake evidence based audit and research projects to further own and team’s clinical practice and make recommendations to the clinical lead of that service regarding changes in practice by the team.

Contribute to the implementation of specific changes to practice and service protocols.

Deputise in the Band 7s absence as required.

Working for our organisation

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country’s most culturally diverse areas. It’s a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.

We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.

Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.

Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population.” It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It’s what makes us unique.

We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose.  When we say we’re ‘with you all the way’ we want you to know that we mean it. Visit the SWB website to find out more about our ambitions and people plans.
