Radiography is a rewarding career which requires a highly developed knowledge and professional skill-set to enable you to work across a range of settings.

Main duties of the job

  • Diagnostic Radiography Degree Apprentices (Level 6) will work under the supervision and guidance of a qualified Diagnostic Radiographer for the duration of their apprenticeship (3 years).
  • You will carry out radiographic examinations in line with local departmental protocols, as well assist in the imaging department as requested by qualified Diagnostic Radiographers.
  • This will include working with multi-disciplinary teams to care and support individuals to achieve diagnostic imaging in a range of tasks.
  • You will work closely with the Diagnostic Radiographers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team to image patients in order to diagnose, treat or improve management of patient conditions in order to facilitate discharge from hospital.

Apprentices will be working towards completing a Diagnostic Radiographer degree with an affiliated HEI.

The apprenticeship will comprise of:

  • On the job training and academic weeks at an affiliated University.
  • On the job – mentorship and structured progression for the student (e-portfolio).
  • University sessions set for practical components.
  • Flexible learning approach – online lectures / interactions to aid flexible learning.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Radiographers are registered healthcare professionals specialising in caring for people of all ages. As a Diagnostic Radiographer, you will use cutting-edge technology to take images of the insides of patients to help understand and diagnose conditions. Based in a hospital, a Diagnostic Radiographer can work and specialise in many different areas of imaging including in X-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, CT, Fluoroscopy, Dentals, DXA, and Theatres, for example. Diagnostic Radiographers are also central to a wider multidisciplinary team, working and consulting with colleagues across various departments.

Diagnostic Radiographers are responsible for ensuing their own professional knowledge and skills through continuous professional development (CPD) and support the development of others.

The Apprenticeship will comprise of:

  • On the job training and off the job day release study with the University of Hertfordshire
  • You will be provided with a dedicated time for study and for independent research to support your development in this role
  • Apprentices will study key concepts and knowledge base relevant to Radiography
  • On the job – mentorship, shadowing and structured progression for the Apprenticeship / student (e-portfolio)
  • There will be a flexible learning approach – online and face to face lectures / interactions to aid flexible learning
  • Departmental rotation and professional practice experience is an integral part of the Apprenticeship – with simulation exercises as well as time given to complete reflective journal
  • Apprentices will be required to complete a BSC (Hons) as a Diagnostic Radiographer approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Upon registering with the HCPC via the Apprenticeship route, you are guaranteed a job as a Band 5 Diagnostic Radiographer at Cambridge University Hospitals

Entry Requirements

GCSE English and Maths held at Grade 4 or above (old grading C or above) or Level 2 equivalent such as functional skills.

Level 3 Science based qualifications equating to 112 UCAS points (this could be, but is not limited to, A Levels ABB-BBB including Science and or Mathematics, BTEC Extended Diplomas DDM in Applied Science or Health related subject or Access to Higher Education Science or Healthcare pathway).

Please ensure that all relevant qualifications are clearly stated on the application with the grade achieved.

Requirements - Apprenticeship funding rules

NB: Due to UK apprenticeship funding regulations, applicants must have a right to work in the UK or for EU citizens, hold pre-settled or settled status and have been a UK resident for the last three years or have indefinite leave to remain with documents that are not due to expire during the duration of the apprenticeship contract. Applicants must also not already have a qualification at a higher level within the same subject matter.

Essential criteria
