Are you a dedicated and compassionate paediatric nurse with a passion for delivering exceptional care in a fast paced emergency setting ?
Peterborough City Hospital; is seeking a motivated Paediatric Deputy Sister/ Charge Nurse, to join our dedicated Children and Young People's Emergency Department. In this leadership role, you will work alongside our team, to ensure high quality, family centred care for babies, children and young people in emergency situations. You will also be fully supported by two experienced Paediatric managers, who are committed to your development and success in this role.
This role offers excellent professional growth opportunities, including training in triage for both paediatric injuries and illnesses, experience in our Urgent treatment Centre, and skill development in resuscitation ( resus) care for paediatric patients needing critical support.
Our amazing team will assist you in managing your daily duties and responsibilities while rotating between the Urgent Treatment Centre and the Emergency Department. Our ED acts as a single point of access for all emergencies offering treatment to more than 100,000 patients per year. We serve a diverse population that is reflected in our workforce.

Main duties of the job
- You will ensure the delivery of high-quality care for infants, children and young people who attend the Emergency Department alongside the ED/Paediatric team, Clinical teams, Matrons, Practice Development Team (PDT) and the wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
- Provide strong, visible clinical leadership, supporting nursing staff to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care.
- Actively participate in and lead emergency situations, demonstrating excellent clinical decision -making.
- Mentor, support, and develop junior nurses and other healthcare professionals, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with two Paediatric Managers who will provide preceptorship, guidance and support as you step in your leadership position.
- Enhance your resus skills, with opportunities to care for paediatric patients requiring critical resuscitation support.
- Utilize your triage skills for assessing both paediatric injuries and illnesses, and gain hands - on experience in our Urgent Treatment Centre.
- As a leader, you will be a role model to junior staff members providing clinical supervision and support to the team. You will also, be supporting a multi-disciplinary team in different areas of the Emergency Care setting as required

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Child) / RNC
- 2 Years’ experience working in ED or acute medical admission area
- Ability to comprehensively assess children and a working knowledge of Manchester Triage
- Teaching/Mentorship qualification or working towards
- PILS trained
- 3 years post registration experience
Desirable criteria
- Degree in Paediatric Nursing
- Post registration additional courses (i.e. HDU course)
- Completion of or working towards a leadership programme
- APLS/EPALS TNCC/ATNC HMIMMS
Experience/Knowledge/ Skills/Ability
Essential criteria
- Sufficient experience in caring for the acutely unwell child and clinical skills including: • Cannulation/venepuncture • Competence in leading and supporting a team • Ability to work in a demanding and busy environment • Comprehensive applied anatomy and physiology relevant to clinical area. • Ability to function as part of the multi professional team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable criteria
- Practical teaching experience formally or informally
- Link Nurse Role
- Participation in change management project
- Experience of audit and research in effecting change in nursing practice.
