Job overview

Design and technical implementation and support of the Health Board’s IT Server Systems. Provision of support to IT staff, and where appropriate, training and mentoring of junior staff.

The term “IT Server Systems” refers to networked IT Systems (principally, but not necessarily, File, Application or Infrastructure Servers) using the Microsoft Windows or Linux Server operating system based on physical or virtual hardware.

This infrastructure is currently based on a National AD domain, VMWare, Windows Server, Linux and Veeam and M365.  A number of servers/services will be moving to Azure or AWS in the future.  The role will include both ongoing day to day support as well as development, build and implementation of this infrastructure. Maintenance of security within the infrastructure will be a key responsibility including maintaining migration and upgrade pathways and plans. As will contributions to the strategic advance and betterment of the Health Board's server based digital provision in a rapidly evolving society seeking to make best uses new infrastructure models such as cloud based services.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity exists within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board's Digital Operations Department for an IT Server Support Consultant.

The Server Team maintain two main data centres supporting multiple virtual server farms which in turn support more than seven hundred server instances. These sit astride one of the largest data networks within the NHS Organisation and provide the bedrock of digital services within the Health Board.

Cardiff and Vale NHS University Health Board have an opening for a Band 6 Server Support consultant who will provide technical expertise within the Server Team.

Successful applicants will deal with all technical aspects associated with the health and well being of severs and storage infrastructure in order to ensure delivery of clinical and business services within the Health Board.

Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic and will want to work into a rapidly changing environment littered with interesting challenges.

  • Windows Server installation and configuration, in a mixed corporate LAN & WAN
  • Experience of infrastructure administration and support
  • Troubleshooting hardware and software faults at server level
Desirable criteria
  • Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, M365, OneDrive, SharePoint.
  • PowerShell and scripting experience
  • Performance & activity monitoring software.
  • Virtualisation technologies including but not limited to; VMWare, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Xen
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu Linux or Oracle Linux
  • Veeam Backup and Replication knowledge.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge & technical skills in Windows or Windows Server (including installation, configuration & administration in mixed corporate LAN & WAN environment).
  • Technical ability in hardware and software and fault diagnosis.
  • Networking basics, including common protocols and services.
