Job overview

You will be responsible for providing clinical care at Senior Dental Officer level with a particular focus on special care dentistry, paediatric dentistry, sedation services and services for other vulnerable patient groups that meet the criteria for treatment in CDS.

You will assist the Clinical Director in the planning and delivery of Community Dental Services across Hywel Dda but with a particular focus on Ceredigion. 

Main duties of the job

To provide dental treatment to patients within the remit of the Community Dental Service in dental clinics, hospitals and domiciliary settings, including driving between establishments and the transportation of appropriate equipment required for such  visits.

This includes provisions under general anaesthesia and inhalation sedation for adults and children where appropriate. 
To provide preventive care and advice to individual patients and their carers. This may also include involvement in the development of oral health promotion services to groups of such patients, their carers or staff in conjunction with the Oral Health Team. 
To provide advice to and delegation of patient treatment to community dentists and dental auxiliary staff in cases where the specialised skills of a senior community dentist are not required.

  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • - Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent
  • - Current General Dental Council registration certificate
  • - Current Performers number, VT number or completion of competency Equivalence scheme and therefore eligible for immediate inclusion on to Performer list
Desirable criteria
  • - Appropriate post-graduate qualification to specialist field. Inclusion on Specialist list
  • - Sedation experience/SAAD accreditation

Abilities and Skills

Essential criteria
  • - Good communication skills – interpersonal, written and verbal
  • - Ability to organise self, clinic and respond to time pressures
  • - Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • - Ability to use a clinical computer system

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • - Experienced in a wide range of general and/or community dentistry
  • - Minimum 5 years postgraduate experience
  • - Experience in Special Care dentistry and paediatric dentistry in the previous two years
  • - Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development
  • - Understanding of clinical governance and audit
Desirable criteria
  • - Experience in provision of care under General Anaesthesia and conscious sedation
