The Community Therapy Team South Cumbria are seeking to  recruit  a  motivated, proactive and adaptable physiotherapist, as we continue to develop the services we offer for the residents and community in Westmorland and Furness. 

We are looking for a Physiotherapist to join the South Cumbria Community Therapy Team, primarily based at Parkview Gardens Intermediate Care Unit (in Barrow in Furness)  with the opportunity to also work in the  community/peoples own homes.   

We are a supportive and welcoming team and you will be actively supported by our clinical leads in this role. 

 Service hours : Monday - Friday 08:00 - 18:30 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00-17:00 on roster 

Secondment opportunity considered with current line managers approval. 

Main duties of the job

To work as an individual within the community physiotherapy team undertaking specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with frequently complex problems in their own homes, community hospital or residential/nursing home.

To work as an autonomous practitioner taking responsibility for the management of patients on own caseload without direct supervision.

To continue to develop specialist clinical skills, knowledge and experience through participation in In-Service training and specialist Personal Development as identified in Personal Development Plans, (E.g. specialist external courses, shadowing etc).

To maintain effective communication links with patients, carers and all associated professional practitioners, including the completion of accurate clinical records in line with trust and professional body codes of practice.

To regularly assist in the planning & delivery of team and departmental training and education sessions, to further professional and personal development for staff, working with the guidance and support of senior members of staff if required.

To supervise the clinical practice of physiotherapy support staff and assistants, Band 5 physiotherapists and students.

To participate in research and audit as requested by the physiotherapy manager.

To be responsible for the clinical education and practice of Physiotherapy Undergraduates accepted on clinical placement.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qulification

Essential criteria
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registered Physiotherapist.
  • Honours Degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy approved by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy/ Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Evidence of relevant post graduate specialist clinical education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive experience as a Staff grade in the core competencies within physiotherapy for example: elderly care, musculo-skeletal, neurology, orthopaedics and cardio-respiratory care.
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills in English in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of working within a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a community setting
  • Experience in NHS or UK Social Care setting

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of commitment, motivation and adaptability gained in previous roles
  • Must demonstrate a knowledge of team / group dynamics and understand the role of a Specialist Physiotherapist within a team.
  • Understanding of legal responsibilities within the profession
  • Must be able to demonstrate the confidence to take independent action within expected capabilities
  • Good communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential. Ability to liaise effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to motivate patients and other staff/understanding of patient activation
  • IT skills relevant to post (EPR/Microsoft systems)
  • To have a knowledge of audit tools and awareness of organisational and clinical standards in Physiotherapy.
  • Ability to travel independently in a community setting

  • Experience working with people who have dementia/cognitive impairment
