Applications are invited for the role of Director of Breast Screening for North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service.
The North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service, as part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, operates Breast Screening and Symptomatic services from dedicated imaging units at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital.
In addition, we operate two mobile units in the community.
The North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service is a highly performing service for Breast Screening with a dedicated, caring and professional team of Consultant Radiologists, Consultant Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Mammographers, Assistant Practitioners, Clinical Support Workers, Programme Management and Admin teams.
The unit is fully digital with a robust PACS system. Our Radiology team is also part of the strong and effective UHMB Breast Multidisciplinary Team alongside members of the Surgical, Histopathology, Breast Care Nurses and Oncology services.
Main duties of the job
The Programme Director for Breast Screening has overall
accountability for the safe and effective provision of the breast screening service. This is from the identification of the eligible screening cohort to the point of diagnosis as commissioned by NHS England.
You will:
•Have responsibility for the leadership, management,
performance, quality, governance and coordination of the
service
•Provide leadership and a behavioural role model for
provision of compassionate care within the breast
screening service
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Substantively employed senior clinician, working in the acute hospital , registered with GMC or other statutory regulatory body.
- The postholder for this role should be a consultant breast radiologist, consultant practitioner or breast clinician experienced in the full range of triple assessment. Alternatively, they can be a consultant from within the breast screening service – for example breast surgeon or breast histopathologist – but this would require a lead radiology advisor who would be a consultant radiologist, consultant practitioner, or breast clinician experienced in the full range of triple assessment to support the role
- Evidence of continuous professional development
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive involvement in management roles
- Considerable experience in clinical leadership roles

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
