Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in our friendly radiotherapy team at Torbay Hospital.  You will be responsible for scheduling radiotherapy appointments, collating and validating radiotherapy coding and completing general administrative tasks as required.  In addition to this, the role will involve liaising with patients and our multi-professional team.

We are looking for someone who is caring, polite, enthusiastic and works well in a team.  You will need to be IT proficient and able to quickly learn new IT systems and have excellent attention to detail. Coupled with this we are looking for someone who is able to make complex decisions with regard to waiting list management (within set guidelines) and an aptitude for problem solving to ensure capacity is maximised.

Regarding working hours/days – this can be discussed at interview and could be worked 7.5 hours a day over four days, or spread over five days, within Monday to Friday and core hours of the service.

Main duties of the job

The Radiotherapy Support Worker will be responsible for providing a high standard of administrative support and a highly professional, patient-focused service to the Radiotherapy service.

The post holder will be responsible for Radiotherapy administration including the booking of patients through the Radiotherapy Pathway ensuring all associated tasks are completed in accordance with local protocol.

The post holder will liaise on a daily basis with a range of staff including radiographers, nursing staff, clerical and secretarial staff, healthcare scientists, consultant clinical oncologists and chemotherapy schedulers.

The post holder will liaise directly with the patient regarding their pre-treatment or treatment appointment, providing information and reassurance.

Working for our organisation

The department comprises of two matched VERSA Elekta Linacs, Mosaiq Oncology Management System, Pinnacle Treatment Planning System (TPS), Limbus AI OAR outlining software and Canon Aquilion CT Scanner.

We have a Support and Information Radiographer, Urology Specialist Radiographer, and Gynae/Colorectal Specialist Radiographer who have all undertaken independent prescribing.

We have lots of exciting new plans including implementing EPIC EPR, Surface guided radiotherapy and updating our software systems.

Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE C in Maths and English
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent level of knowledge and skill in using computer applications based on a number of years’ experience of using computerised system

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Extensive experience working with a variety of software systems
  • Experience of booking and managing patient appointments
  • Experience of dealing with people (patients, carers) over the telephone or in person
  • Experience of patient waiting list management
  • Understanding of radiotherapy
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs and ability to quickly learn and utilise new software systems.
  • Prepared to develop knowledge in Radiotherapy and relate that knowledge to patient waiting list managemen
  • Understanding the importance of, and practice, patient confidentiality
  • Polite and professional telephone manner and ability to deal with angry, difficult or distressed patients on the telephone and face to face
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology
  • Working in a healthcare setting
  • Experience and understanding of radiotherapy coding and scheduling
