Consultant Radiologist

Consultant

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are looking for a full-time Consultant Interventional Radiologist to join our small team based in Southend University Hospital.

Running "hot" weeks, you will support our work within the hub based at Basildon University Hospital, all other worked weeks will be based at the Southend site.

A broad range of vascular and non-vascular IR is performed at Southend. This includes peripheral angioplasty and stenting with the option to perform complex vascular intervention including BTK cases at the Basildon vascular hub in conjunction with a Southend vascular colleague.

Arterial embolization is performed for acute haemorrhage, but also for palliation (Southend site is the regional cancer centre). Uterine artery embolization is performed, patients stay overnight under the care of gynaecology but is currently subject to case-by-case approval due to the local Service Restriction Policy, but applications are done by gynaecology and are usually successful. Venous work includes fistuloplasty, IVC filter placement and retrieval, varicocoele and pelvic vein embolization.

There is also a good volume of non-vascular intervention. Southend hosts urological cancer surgery for 5 hospital sites across South, Mid and East Essex.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver a diagnostic and interventional radiology service of high quality.
  • Contribute to development of the general and specialist imaging service to support the Trust in ensuring provision of high quality diagnostic support throughout the week including sessions in ultrasound & cross-sectional imaging.
  • Work flexibly with colleagues to support the timely management of emergencies and inpatients.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings (MDT).
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of clinical protocols.
  • Ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit,  evidence- based research and appraisal.

Working for our organisation

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest in the country, with a workforce of approximately 15,000 who serve a population of 1.2 million people.

We work together, and in conjunction with MSE Health and Care Partnership, to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients in a compassionate way, and provide a respectful, but vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

From facilities through to consultant specialists we want to be the best, to achieve this we need to recruit not just those who are the finest in their field but also those who have the potential to be. Yes, experience is important but so is outlook – if you are dynamic, forward-thinking and enthusiastic we want you to join us.

We not only offer you a good working environment with flexible working opportunities, but also the opportunity to develop your career with access to appropriate training for your job and the support to succeed and progress
