Job overview
The Ward housekeeper will work as a team member in the allocated area under the direction/guidance of the Sister/Charge Nurse or his/her nominated deputy. The focus of the role is to support the nursing team with non-clinical tasks by co-ordinating the provision of meals and help maintain a safe, clean, comfortable environment for patients
Main duties of the job
- Being courteous and helpful to patients, families, colleagues and all users and visitors to the ward.
- Maintain a safe environment in conjunction with other staff.
- Assist in ensuring that patients receive appropriate food.
- Order non-clinical supplies where necessary keeping a record of orders and co-ordinate delivery.
- Ensuring the kitchen in the ward is clean.
- Checking on linen delivered is met to the hospital standards.
- Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Welcome patients to the ward in a friendly, professional manner. Orientating them and their families to the ward and hospital where necessary.
• Provide accurate and timely information to patients regarding ward routines i.e. visiting times, mealtimes.
• Liaise with works department regarding requests for works
• Report any damaged equipment and required maintenance repairs
• Operate a follow up / bring forward system to ensure maintenance work is completed
• Assist in ensuring that patients receive appropriate food
• Assist patients in the completion of menu cards
• Arrange, co-ordinate and collect additional food as requested by the patient in liaison with the nurse responsible for the patient
• Order non-clinical supplies where necessary keeping a record of orders and co-ordinate delivery
• Unpack stocks and supplies where necessary recording items delivered
• Rotate stock to ensure usage of supplies
• Ensure that regular stock items are available for use and liaise with Supplies and other departments should deficits in supplies occur and also report it to Ward Sister.
• Clean kitchen equipment where necessary i.e. fridge, satellite oven, cupboards, tables etc
• Liaise with Senior Housekeeper regarding additional cleaning.
• Ensure that the linen received on the ward is of good quality and stored correctly
• Undertake photocopying on instruction of ward Sister
• Undertake some computer duties on instruction of ward Sister
