An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacist to lead the Medicines Safety services at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS FT. You will be one of four associate directors of pharmacy reporting directly to the Chief Pharmacist

The role is mainly based at Royal Preston Hospital but there are also opportunities to work at Chorley Hospital or off site.

We are seeking a forward thinking, dynamic pharmacist with senior pharmacy management and service delivery experience who is capable of leading,  developing and motivating teams to ensure consistently high standards and representing pharmacy both internally and externally.

Main duties of the job

Strategically lead and the Medicines Management team within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Take a lead role in the development and implementation of the trust Medicines Optimisation Strategy and ensure this is represented in the ICS Medicines Optimisation Strategy.  

The Lead is an expert in Medicines Safety, Education and Innovation representing the Trust in matters relating to Medicines Safety, Education, Governance, Risk and Compliance locally and nationally.

 As part of the Pharmacy Senior Leadership Team the Lead Pharmacist supports the Director of Pharmacy, Divisional and Board Directors in the delivery of plans, strategies and service changes to meet the purpose, aims and ambitions of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as outlined in the trust Strategy. 

The Lead is responsible for 6 specialist distinct functions; Medicines Education, Medicines Safety, Medicines Governance, EPMA and IT, Research and Clinical Trials and the Administration Team. The Lead is accountable for the operational leadership, financial control and long term strategic growth of these functions within the organisation and in collaboration with external organisations. 

Responsible for all aspects of Medicines Education across the organisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not be limited to:

  • Undertake the role as Trust MSO.
  • Lead the Medicines Safety team.
  • Lead on Medication related National Safety Alerts, Shortages, NPSA reviews, CQC requests and responses, delivering action and improvement plans. 
  • Undertake investigations, develop PSIIs and thematic reviews.
  • Contribute to and attend when required coroners inquests and other investigations. 
  • Responsible for organisation of the Medicines Governance Committee, ensuring all submissions are to a high standard and where applicable community implications have been considered and discussed with ICS colleagues. 
  • Responsible for all Medicines Education; undergraduate Medical, Dental, junior doctor, nursing, pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and unregistered staff. 
  • Deliver quality assurance reports on Education provision and bid for funding for staff CPD. 
  • Work closely with HEE and the ICS Workforce groups.  
  • Lead the EPMA & IT teams. 
  • Lead community services ensuring the service meets regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Registration as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 8 years post registration hospital experience with at least 2 years in a senior role.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of specialist areas; Safety, Education, Governance, Formulary, Regulation and Compliance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS commissioning and formulary
  • Knowledge of Medicines legislation, the role of the MSO and CQC expectations.
  • Evidence of strategic planning/service development
  • Significant service / personnel management / supervision
  • Experience of deriving key messages from complex information and large data sets and presenting in a user-friendly format.
  • Experience of significant improvement work.
  • Workforce Development.
Desirable criteria
  • Acute Trust / Tertiary Referral Centre experience
  • Knowledge of current NHS policy drivers and commissioning agendas.
  • Experience of training different staff groups.
