Job overview

The Department of Oral Surgery is seeking to appoint an appropriately qualified, enthusiastic individual to join their team. Applications are therefore invited for a substantive term full time Specialty Doctor in Oral Surgery at King’s College Hospital Dental Institute.

Clinical Services in Acute Dental Care and Oral Surgery are delivered in a multidisciplinary environment in partnership with Maxillofacial Surgery and Academic Oral Surgery (responsible for the undergraduate clinical teaching programme at Kings, for research and for some specialist clinical services). Other dental services at KCH, which facilitate the interdepartmental management of some patients, include Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Special Care Dentistry and Oral Medicine. Diagnostic services are based primarily in the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Imaging and include ultrasonography, sialography and cone beam CT scanning.

Main duties of the job

1.    Together with the other clinical staff, to provide specialist secondary and tertiary Oral Surgery services for patients referred to the Oral Surgery department.  This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the effective functioning of the department.

2.    Responsible for the cover of periods of annual leave and short-term sickness of colleagues.

3.     Provide clinical supervision of junior dental staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

4.     Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

5.    Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Divisional management team.

6.    Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.

7.    Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will be based at the Dental Institute at Denmark Hill and the proposed 10 PA Job Plan is attached. This will be reviewed within 3 months of the successful applicant taking up their post. 

All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trusts sites as required by the service. As an employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.  Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

·         The provision of a first class clinical service

·         Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty

·         Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King’s College London / KHP

·         Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies

·         Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans

·         Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Division or the Trust

 

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the United Kingdom Dental Council (GDC)
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent
  • BDS or equivalent

Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in the planning and management of oral surgery patients under local anaesthesia, and appropriate sedation techniques (verified logbook)
  • Training and experience in the use of Sedation as part of Oral Surgery clinical practice (verified logbook)
  • Immediate life support (ILS)
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development and training
  • Effective participation in clinical audits/service evaluations/quality improvement programmes (with at least one audit project in last 12 months)
  • Proven teaching skills and a commitment to the training of junior dentists
