Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to provide specialist skills and knowledge to support with the management of the medical rehabilitation, care of the elderly and frailty patient cohort. This role would run alongside the Team Lead Occupational Therapist, to support with ensuring the department is providing an efficient and effective service as well as some day to day operational management. The post carries a clinical caseload.

The post holder will have good acute and community experience in a variety of acute medical presentations and pathologies, and patients presenting with frailty syndromes. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to assess and discharge patients in a timely and appropriate manner with involvement and referrals to our community services.

Please note: Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.

Main duties of the job

·    To support the Team Lead Occupational Therapist with the day to day running of the occupational therapy service in medical rehabilitation, ensuring that all patients are given appropriate and effective occupational therapy intervention in accordance with national guidelines

To work as an autonomous practitioner providing highly specialised occupational therapy assessment and treatment to a caseload of complex patients and maintain up to date occupational therapy records. 

·     To be a role model for expert clinical care and lead on specific projects / service developments and management functions as delegated by the Clinical Lead Therapist.

 

·      To use evidence based principles/current best practice and specialist skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions and to ensure that all members of your team do likewise.

 

·      To work with relevant multi-disciplinary team colleagues along integrated care pathways, to deliver best practice and propose changes in practice in light of new evidence and maintain high service profile.

 

· To be responsible for the supervision, teaching and day to day line management of more junior staff and students on placement.

 

·      To be involved with and initiate where appropriate, service developments.

 

·       To participate in the 5 in 7 ED weekend rota on a regular basis. 

 

Deputise for Clinical Lead Therapist as required.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc or Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant post graduate qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience working as an autonomous practitioner at Band 6 level or above in an acute physical hospital setting managing patients with general medical, orthopaedic, neurology, rehabilitation and general surgery conditions
  • Experience of working as part of the MDT in a collaborative way
  • Experience of providing teaching to therapy colleagues
  • Evidence of appraisal, supervision and teaching of physiotherapists, assistants and students
  • Evidence of service development and audit
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of teaching occupational therapists and other professionals within a MDT work environment
  • Demonstration of experience as a team leader

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of challenges of working in hospital setting
  • Ability to lead a team and oversee the workload
  • Effective self management including time management & prioritisation
  • Ability to carry out appropriate assessments of occupational performance and skills for clients with multiple and complex needs
  • Demonstrates ability in assessing a wide range of multi-pathological and complex conditions based on advance theoretical knowledge of Occupational Therapy in the acute setting
  • Demonstrates ability to formulate complex discharge plans
  • Advanced communication skills
