Job overview

This initial 6 month post, renewable for one year thereafter, offers advanced training in vascular surgery. This post is designed to support the clinical activities of the Department of Vascular Surgery at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and at Bromley campus. The post is not recognised for pre-CCST training but is designed to provide advanced experience in vascular surgery.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should be at the experience level of ST5. The post holder should also be able to demonstrate experience in all aspects of vascular surgery and also be competent in emergency and vascular trauma surgery. King’s is a Major Trauma Centre and the post holder will participate in SpR on call vascular emergency and vascular trauma. The department offers excellent opportunities for clinical research and candidates with a proven research interest and track record will be preferred. Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is mandatory.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Daily ward rounds for inpatients under the care of the vascular team
  • Attend theatre sessions and under consultant supervision perform operations according to an agreed level of competence
  • Respond to vascular emergencies
  • Maintain communication with other health professionals
  • Supervision of SHO’s and Foundation Doctors
  • Collaboratively work with other Specialist Registrars performing day to day care of the vascular surgical patients
  • Teaching commitments to medical students
  • Expected to attend and contribute to the departmental research / audit programme
  • Involvement in the research interests of the department will be encouraged Participate in the on call vascular rota  
  • The intensity of the vascular oncall rota is 1:6 non-resident.

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in Vascular Surgery at registrar level
  • Research experience, presentations, publications
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in endovascular surgery

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • MRCS part 1 (or equivalent)
  • MRCS part 2 (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • PhD, MD (original research)
  • Other degrees/qualifications

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience managing vascular patients
  • Evidence of participation and active involvement in an audit project
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Evidence of teaching experience; involvement in organised teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance & resource constraints; mgmt/financial awareness exp of committee work
  • Information technology skills
  • Enthusiasm for teaching; exposure to different grps/teaching methods
  • Teaching the teachers course and certificate
