Job overview

The post holder will be responsible as the senior and lead  electrical craftsperson within the in-house electrical maintenance team and to liaise and or coordinate directly with electrical contractors in the day to day running of the Estates service delivery within the Mile End Hospital and or Royal London Hospital Retained Estates within Barts Health Estates & Facilities Services.

Under direction of the Estates Supervisor and or Estates Manager ensure all buildings, plant and equipment are electrically serviced and maintained throughout Mile End Hospital and or Royal London Hospital Retained Estate in accordance with Statutory & Mandatory requirements in a timely manner. Including Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and Reactive Maintenance (RM), minor works, major overhauls and replacement. In addition, the Senior Electrical Craftsperson will be required to be a self-starter who is able to work on his/her own initiative.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the estates electrical team and maintenance contractors to ensure statutory, critical and routine tasks are completed, recorded, and fully documented for the Estates Management Team.
  • Support the in‑house electrical team and contractors by ensuring adequate spares and materials are available for efficient completion of works.
  • Implement improvement plans where poor performance is identified within the electrical team, escalating concerns to the Estates Supervisor or Estates Manager if progress is not achieved.
  • Review completed electrical works to ensure quality, timeliness and cost‑effectiveness, addressing any issues directly with staff or contractors.
  • Provide technical support and leadership to resolve electrical faults.
  • Promote and uphold health and safety requirements for staff, patients, visitors and contractors through safe systems of work, site inductions, and risk/COSHH assessments.
  • Work with the Estates Supervisor or Estates Manager, alongside the BHT contract performance team, to support effective auditing and ensure full compliance in delivering Trust electrical services across in‑house and PFI/outsourced provision.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant legislation, safety alerts, HTMs, NBNs, safe systems of work, approved codes of practice, and associated policies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good Literacy & numeracy skills
  • To have served a recognised apprenticeship in an electrical engineering discipline or have equivalent experience.
  • Qualified with Electrical ONC and or HNC level of education and or equivalent qualification.
  • A good working knowledge of Health & Safety principles within electrical engineering and building systems. Knowledge of electrical maintenance to meet relevant HTM 06.01 and HTM 06.02 standard

Experience

Essential criteria
  • In depth experience of healthcare electrical building services and to lead on the maintenance of the electrical team.
  • Detailed working knowledge of preventative and reactive electrical maintenance and associated HTM
  • Experience of allocating planned and reactive work to the in-house electrical team and contractors.
  • Experience of successfully leading an electrical team and contractors to meet agreed outcomes.
  • Understanding Standing Financial Instructions in relation to procurement and commissioning of external contracting services
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of information systems for the management of maintenance activity (Concept CAFM System).
  • Experience of successfully leading an electrical team and contractors to meet agreed outcomes.
  • Understanding Standing Financial Instructions in relation to procurement and commissioning of external contracting services.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A good working knowledge of Health & Safety principles within electrical engineering and building systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical maintenance to meet relevant HTM 06.01 and HTM 06.02 standard

  • Ability to lead and motivate Estates electrical team
  • Able to work on own initiative and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to provide advice to service end users, on a wide range of maintenance issues
