St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.
We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.
As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.
Job overview
St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon with a specialist interest in complex spinal surgery, including paediatric and adult spinal deformity and neurotrauma. The post is based within the Atkinson Morley Wing Neuroscience Centre, a Major Trauma Centre providing tertiary neuroscience services to a population of 3.5 million.
The successful candidate will join one of the busiest neurosurgical departments in the UK, contributing to a high-volume spinal service delivering approximately 2,800 procedures annually. The role includes elective and emergency spinal surgery, participation in Complex Spine and General Neurosurgical on-call rotas, and active involvement in multidisciplinary working, including MSCC, trauma and degenerative spine MDTs.
The post holder will support the development of an integrated neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal service, contribute to service innovation (including endoscopic and day-case spinal pathways), and maintain high standards of clinical governance, teaching, and research.
This is a 10 PA role (9 DCC, 1 SPA) with opportunities for service development, education, and academic engagement within a leading teaching hospital environment

Provide independent elective and emergency spinal neurosurgical care, including paediatric and adult deformity.
- Participate in the major trauma MDT and be an integral part of the neurotrauma team.

Participate in the 1:9 complex spine and 1:14 general neurosurgical on-call rotas.

Deliver outpatient clinics, operating lists, ward rounds, and MDT participation (MSCC, trauma, degenerative spine).

Contribute to development of the integrated neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal service.

Maintain high standards of clinical governance, audit, appraisal, and revalidation.

Supervise and teach junior doctors, fellows, and medical students.

Engage in research and contribute to departmental academic activity where appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Planned activities for this role will be scheduled on a rolling four-week timetable. The job plan provided is indicative and will be reviewed with the successful candidate prior to their start date and will also be part of the wider departmental job planning process. It will be reviewed annually as part of Trust Job planning.
This is representative of the job plan that will be offered but the details are subject to change prior to commencement. A total of 10 PAs (9 DCC and 1 SPA) will be offered including on call activity (see below indicative job plan with SPA. This job plan is open to discussion with the successful candidate.

- Postgraduate medical qualification in FRCS(NS)
- UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of joining the specialist register
