Job overview

Job summary

1.    To be responsible for the delivery of high quality, evidence-based dietetic advice to a complex ICU/HDU and surgical caseload within the hospital

2.    To be an autonomous practitioner and work independently to manage a significant clinical caseload

3.    To provide leadership for junior & unqualified staff through supervision, support & appraisal

4.    To provide specialist input into a variety of MDTs including the Adult Intensive Care, Colorectal and Nutrition Support to ensure nutritional care plans are in place for patients under their care

5.    To contribute to policy development on matters relating to nutrition and dietetics.

6.    To lead on audits across the intensive care dietetic service and contribute to audits across the dietetic service

7.    To cover Band 6 and 7 work during annual leave or sickness. To act as the adult team lead in their absence

8.    To work with the Dietetic & Speech Therapy Service Manager(s) to provide operational management and leadership for Dietetic staff and on service improvements and developments

 

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities 
1. To be responsible of the delivery of a comprehensive Nutrition & Dietetic service working within the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Professional Code of Conduct and the HPCP Professional Standards of Practice.
2. To work autonomously to provide expert nutrition advice and therapeutic support to patients, carers and other health care professionals. This requires collation of highly complex information including:-
a. Nutritional assessment, diagnosis and interpretation of biochemistry, 
haematology, anthropometric data, clinical condition and diet history.
b. Development of treatment plans which include calculation of nutritional 
requirements, patient centred goals and treatment outcomes.

c. Prescription of dietary treatment using ACBS products for conditions 
adhering to professional/ clinical guidelines.

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent or post graduate qualification in Nutrition and Dietetics
  • Evidence of current HCPC registration (State Registered Dietitian)
  • Specialist training in the area of nutrition support/ ICU
  • Member of BDA Specialist Interest Group CCSG
  • Thorough understanding and post graduate dietetic experience of a variety of outpatient and inpatient work including care of elderly, stroke, gastro, medical and surgical wards including ICU/ HDU.
  • Experience of working in and specialist knowledge of nutrition support in an intensive care setting
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff, staff recruitment and managing a defined clinical area e.g. nutrition support.
  • Experience of working with patients with patients gastro medical and surgical diagnoses and with patients who require artificial feeding (enteral and parenteral)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of further post graduate study in dietetics at masters level e.g. British Dietetic Association (BDA) postgraduate courses equivalent to Masters degree
  • Member of the British Dietetic Association or covered by professional indemnity insurance.
  • Experience of the recruitment process for junior staff
  • Experience of investigating and responding to complaints
  • Completed competencies in Critical Care and/or Parenteral Nutrition
  • Writing and implementing policies/procedures/guidelines
  • Experience of using AHP Critical Care Development Framework
