Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties of the Post

The consultant job plan will include dedicated sessions for general and specialist complex pacing sessions, outpatient clinics and other cardiology related activity within the HB.  They will work with a team of 4 other existing consultant cardiologists at PCH to support one ‘general cardiology’ firm with appropriate junior medical staff support. PCH is actively looking to expand its range of services and is interested in candidates who may already have, or who are looking to develop, additional sub-specialist skills.

The working timetable will involve 2 weeks in 10 of ‘cardiology ward’ work, during which time the appointee will be the Consultant responsible for the care of cardiology in-patients, and will provide a referral and advice service for acute physicians and other specialities (total approximately 25 patients). For another 2 weeks in 10 the appointee will be the Consultant responsible for the care of GIM inpatients on the cardiology ward (part of ward based working approach) as well as undertaking some elective cardiology work. The other 6 weeks in 10 will entirely involve outpatient and elective cardiology work.  During the ‘off-ward’ week the successful candidate will be undertaking a weekly average of 1-2 cardiology clinics and 2-3 sessions of speciality-based work (elective and acute). Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinics will be required to undertake such duties. Outpatient workload (in line with national guidance) is set at 6 new patients or 12 follow-up patients per post-MRCP Doctor.

The successful candidate will be on the GIM on-call rota which currently is 1:16 weekdays and 1:12 weekends. Weekday on calls require an evening ward round (5pm-9pm) but not a morning ward round (which is covered by acute care physicians except for Saturday morning). Weekend on calls require both morning and evening ward rounds. This time commitment is recognised in the job plan. The on-call also qualifies for time in lieu.
