Occupational Health Technician

Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an Occupational Health Technician to work in our team to support pre-employment, health surveillance including audiometry and spirometry, skin assessments, hand arm vibration, venepuncture, health screening. Previous experience of Occupational Health in a hospital setting would be a distinct advantage, otherwise experience in health surveillance and/ or fitness for work medicals across any sector would be considered. Competent IT user and an ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

We offer a range of high-quality services including infection screening and immunisation, infectious outbreak contact tracing, fitness for work assessments, advice on sickness absence management, advice on stress management, assessment for long-term disability benefits or ill-health retirement, health surveillance, health promotion, training, and education.

We are a friendly team of around 35 staff consisting of doctors, nurses, counsellors, technicians, and admin who work together to deliver an occupational health service to our own Trust and private organisations which we deliver from both Queen's Medical Centre and City Hospital sites.

Our department offers this service Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 and 5:00 excluding bank holidays.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting
  • GCSE equivalent in English and Maths
Desirable criteria
  • Infection Control Course
  • Health and Safety Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working and communicating with patients/carers within a relevant acute and/or community setting
  • Experience of carrying out programmes under the advice of a therapist
  • Experience of working independently.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Occupational Health in NHS &/or commercial environment
  • Clinical experience.
  • Knowledge/experience of E-Opas

  • Ability to work in partnership with people to continuously monitor, evaluate and reassess the effectiveness of all agreed OHSW plans through shared assessment, planning, decision making and goal setting, readjusting agreed goals, documenting progress and decisions made.
  • Provide information in accessible ways to help people understand and make decisions about their health.
  • Being able to effectively communicate with staff of all levels and who may be anxious or concerned

Analytical and Judgement skills

  • Ability to assess a broad range of highly complex information quickly and accurately and formulate plans and act from a range of options.
  • Successfully resolve highly complex problems with competing priorities.

Planning and Organisational Skills

Essential criteria
  • Manages and prioritises workload and meet daily, weekly and monthly deadlines consistently.
  • To work independently and undertake clinics in different environments
  • Ensure the effective organisation of clinical work.

Physical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to use PC and associated office equipment.
  • Accuracy and dexterity for clinical procedures
