Fixed term contract (12-month maternity leave cover)

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hardworking individual, to join our team as a Senior Housekeeper based on the Haematology Ward, Churchill Hospital, Oxford. We care for patients with blood disorders, requiring chemotherapy and other supportive treatments.  

The postholder will work as an integral part of the Ward team ensuring a high-quality service to patients and to provide a service that ensures that the patients’ needs are satisfied, and Ward requirements are met.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Senior Team Leaders to ensure the appropriate and effective delivery of facilities services in order to properly maintain the patient environment.

To supervise the Ward housekeepers, ensuring that all non-clinical aspects of the patient’s comfort are attended to.

To supervise an effective waste segregation and disposal service ensuring compliance with all relevant procedures and legislation.

To support the catering department and nutritional assistant as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • To liaise with the cleaning contractor/in-house housekeeping services/Monitoring Officers to ensure that cleaning standards on the Wards meet the agreed specification and any unsatisfactory areas are rectified.
  • To provide supervision and guidance to domestic staff to ensure that standards and policies are met.
  • To liaise with the nursing and housekeeping team regarding the patient’s day, ensuring that work is planned in the most appropriate way to provide a patient focused and seamless service.
  • To ensure, in conjunction with the Ward co-ordinator, that patients are provided with appropriate beverages at regular intervals throughout the day.  To make and serve beverages to relatives as instructed by the nursing staff and to ensure that patients have the necessary access to beverages throughout their stay in hospital.
  • To establish a programme for the planned changing of curtains in bays, side rooms and windows, ensuring that spares are available.  Support with changing curtains on an ad-hoc basis as required.
  • In conjunction with Clinical Team, to ensure that patient’s cupboards, tables and chairs are clean and free of litter at all times.
  • To ensure that all alcohol gel dispensers, paper towels and soap for hand hygiene are replenished, thus contributing to the prevention of cross-infection from one patient to another.
  • To clean medical equipment as required in conjunction with Clinical Team. Ensure that all patient equipment is kept clean and in a usable condition. To monitor servicing of equipment (i.e. hoists, blood scanners)
