Job overview

The job of the Catering Assistant requires flexibility, physical tasks, precision, and working within cold environments.  The Catering Assistant supports the production and delivery of safe, high‑quality meals for patients, staff, and visitors. Working within the Central Production Unit, the role involves preparing, packing, labelling, and storing food; completing general and deep cleaning; operating pot‑wash equipment; and maintaining hygiene, safety, and quality standards. The post holder may also assist in retail food service areas when required.

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of attending a nationally recognised food hygiene course eg CIEH or working towards one.
  • Moving & Manual Handling
  • Health & Safety.
Desirable criteria
  • Training on Equality & Diversity
  • NVQ Level 1 -Multi-skilled Food Service.
  • Cash handling.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English & Maths Grade A/9 – C/4 or equivalent qualifications or equivalent experience.
Desirable criteria
  • CIEH Level 2 Health & Safety Certificate or equivalent.
  • NVQ or apprenticeship in a Catering subject.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial relative catering and cleaning experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of allergens.
  • Experience of working in a team.

Special Skills/Aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Good effective communication skills.
  • Team working/ability to build relationships

Other Factors

Essential criteria
  • Good understanding of relevant hygiene standards.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to meet the needs of the service. Working across sites may be required.
