Job overview

We are looking to appoint a whole-time Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon (hip and knee primary arthroplasty) to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital and the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield. This post is fixed term for 1 year but with the possibility of an additional  one year extension subject to the mutual agreement of all parties.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with senior colleagues (at both Consultant grade and Specialist Grades)   be responsible for the provision of the elective primary hip and knee arthroplasty services and neck of femur trauma surgery.  They will not be on the acute major trauma on call but will participate in the elective cold site on-call rota based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The appointee will be encouraged and supported to develop their interest in primary hip and knee arthroplasty. The appointee will be expected to assist in the training of trainees.

The appointee will deliver scheduled independent elective outpatient and elective theatre sessions, they will also be scheduled to cover some of the Neck of Femur Trauma lists.  

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of service Specialist- (England (2021).

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree from a recognised UK or overseas university or institution
  • Membership of UK Royal Colleges or equivalent overseas qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practice.
  • A minimum of 12 years full time medical work (or equivalent gained on a part-time basis) since obtaining a primary medical qualification at least 6 of which will be in Trauma and Orthopaedics at a senior level including Specialty Doctor, closed SAS grades and Consultant/Locum Consultant.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the NHS at Specialty doctor level or above.
Desirable criteria
  • CTT or CESR
  • Fellowship or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Manages the difficulties of dealing with complexity and uncertainty in the care of patients, employing expertise and clinical decision-making skills of a senior and independent/ autonomous practitioner
  • Demonstrates the underpinning subject specific competencies to enable practicing at senior grade as evidenced in job plan, logbooks and NJR data
  • Clinically evaluates and manages a patient formulating a prioritised differential diagnosis initiating an appropriate management plan with the ability to review and adjust this depending on outcomes of treatment
  • Critically reflects on own competence, understands own limits, and asks for help when required

Management and Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Collaborate and respecting the multidisciplinary and interprofessional teams to manage risk issues across organisations and settings
  • Understands the principles outlined in the GMC document Good Medical Practice
  • Understands the requirements of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation
  • Demonstrate an understanding of management & Clinical governance issues
  • Awareness of legal responsibilities relevant to the role, such as around mental capacity and deprivation of liberty

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Audit/ Research

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of the issues of clinical effectiveness and audit
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Documented completed audits during training/Experience
  • Evaluates and audits own and others clinical practice and acts on the findings
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding clinical research
  • Documented completed audits during training

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors, doctors in training and/or other allied professionals at all levels.

Communication
