Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our Integrated Mental Health Teams based in West Staffordshire covering the Stafford, Cannock & Codsall areas.
You will be working closely with the Occupational Therapist who supports people with Mental Health conditions who are also autistic or have autistic traits. You will join a developing and innovative service that aims to provide the right care and treatment at the right time, to individuals within each area. You will become part of an established multi-disciplinary team that has a strong emphasis on delivering evidence based psychological interventions to meet the needs of individuals with secondary mental health needs within our neighbourhood.
We are looking for someone who has experience, relevant knowledge and a passion to be working with mental health service users and autistic people, contributing to delivery of a package of care to promote recovery. Applicants need to be able to demonstrate drive and motivation in providing recovery based Occupational Therapy (OT) interventions.
Main duties of the job
- Delivering occupational therapy interventions, in accordance with an agreed care plan, to an identified group of individuals with a neurodevelopmental condition(s) who experience mental health related difficulties under the guidance of a qualified Occupational Therapist.
- To provide occupational therapy support to service users who have a range of mental health conditions to enable them to maintain, restore or create a balance between their abilities and the demands of their occupation and environment in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure.
- Working with registered Occupational Therapists, contributing observations to service user assessments and assisting in delivering therapeutic activities designed by others.
- To carry a designated caseload which remains the responsibility of the registered Occupational Therapist, often working without direct supervision in a variety of community settings, including the service users own home.
- Engaging service users and their carers in therapeutic programmes of care and encourage them in a compassionate manner, to support them in achieving their identified goals and to promote independence and well-being through a client centred approach.

You will have the opportunity to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, which includes other allied health professionals, nursing, medics, social workers and psychology. Your role will involve working closely with other agencies, carers, service users, families, the local community and Community Mental Health Teams, ensuring continuity of service is provided at a high level.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Numeracy, Literacy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)
- Qualifications amounting to 104 UCAS points or above or relevant experience in the specific area of work
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience working as an Occupational Therapy assistant, working alongside Occupational Therapists, or closely related work e.g. nursing/care or AHP assistant.
- Experience of supporting people with mental health conditions, neurodevelopmental conditions (Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia) or learning disabilities.
- Experience working as part of a team.
- Experience of actively engaging in a supervision system.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of presenting to groups of people.
- Experience of running group sessions.
