Job overview
1. As lead of the Safeguarding Team the post holder will contribute to the setting, monitoring and maintenance of robust operational safeguarding, Domestic Abuse, Prevent and DoLS arrangements and training programmes. She/he will contribute to collaborative interagency working and quality assurance frameworks for safeguarding.
2. The post holder will provide expert clinical leadership and direction for safeguarding of patients (adults with care and support needs and children) within the UHNM, inclusive of domestic abuse, DoLS and Prevent
3. The post holder will directly provide, and oversee the provision of supervision and support to all staff re: safeguarding, domestic abuse, Prevent and DoLS particularly the complexities of statutory requirements for adult and child safeguarding
Main duties of the job
Key Areas/Tasks
- Provide robust operational leadership to the Safeguarding team
- Ensure all the Trust sites are treated with equal priority and that managers are aware of the need for their staff to attend mandatory training in safeguarding.
- To lead and manage a safeguarding team, to ensure the service operates a dynamic and responsive approach in supporting the clinical staff across the trust
- Represent the trust on external Safeguarding meetings i.e. DARDR’s, SAR’s, statutory Safeguarding reviews
- Work closely with other specialist safeguarding adults at risk professionals across the health community- safeguarding provider collaborative
- Work in partnership with the Trust’s neighbouring Local Safeguarding Adults Boards and sub committees in delivering and promoting training according to priorities and need as reflected in the training audits- Safeguarding provider collaborative system work
- The post holder will promote a high-quality evidence-based service, developing effective inter-disciplinary and inter-agency relationships to improve the outcomes those at risk of abuse and or neglect (children and adults with care and support needs), domestic abuse, and radicalisation
- As directed by the Lead for Vulnerable Patients, support the Trust to meet statutory requirements for Persons In Position of Trust

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- As required and delegated by the Lead for Vulnerable People produce regular reports/data to inform the Trust Safeguarding Group of current activities and outcomes
- Be responsible for producing and presenting the report to the Trust Safeguarding Group
- Hold line management responsibilities for the safeguarding team ensuring cover for service hours, training and manage annual leave requests and periods of sickness
- Develop, implement and monitor data gathering and contribute to the quarterly Safeguarding Contract reporting to the ICB
- Visibly support the Divisional Nurse Directors, Heads of Nursing and other nurse managers to disseminate learning from reviews and incidents to improve practice across the Trust
- Utilise expert knowledge and understanding of the major political, social, environmental and lifestyle factors that influence safeguarding concerns.
- Maintain accurate and legible notes (written and electronic) in accordance with local, national, legal and professional policies and guidelines
- Develop and review relevant SOP’s, guidelines and policies and lead on its implementation for the team, working with other health professionals to ensure achievement of the Trust’s objectives, as directed by the Lead for Vulnerable Patients
- Be responsible for the safeguarding pages on the Trust internet ensuring content is up to date, evidence based and focused on supporting practice
- Identify and assess risks related to adult and child safeguarding provision, Prevent, MCA/ DoLS, and domestic abuse, and escalate appropriately to Lead for Vulnerable People
- Process risks and incident forms working operationally within the safeguarding team to give timely advice and support to Trust staff
- Promote the “Think Family” agenda across all safeguarding working with the Named professionals to embed the paramountcy of those at risk and make safeguarding personal
- Ensure effective timely communication and information sharing both internally and externally which compliments multidisciplinary / interagency working.
- There is a requirement to exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff and carers requiring tact and diplomacy. Communicate very sensitive, complex condition related information to patients, relatives, colleagues providing empathy and reassurance.
- Provide, receive and analyse complex, sensitive and contentious information, including presenting information to a range of internal and external stakeholders in formal and informal settings.
- There will be a requirement to handle highly sensitive and confidential information regarding live police investigations, which requires the post holder to maintain confidentiality and correct handling of information as per data governance requirements
- Provides and receives highly complex, sensitive or contentious information with significant barriers to acceptance in a hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere
- Frequent exposure to emotional or distressing circumstances
- Attend and be an active member of Trust meetings and working groups in relation to safeguarding matters.
- Co-ordinate and oversee one point of contact / referral for all internal safeguarding issues. Ensuring reviews of and appropriate feedback of all related incidents, complaints and concerns. Frequent requirement for concentration; Concentration required for checking documents and analysing statistics, managing conflicting priorities.
- To support and as directed by the Lead for Vulnerable Patients to produce annual reports relating to adult and child safeguarding, Domestic abuse, Prevent and MCA/ DoLS activity within the Trust
- Produce quarterly assurance reports relating to safeguarding activity within the Trust
- Interpret national and local policy and best practice and advise the Trust accordingly
- It is expected that ALL employees of the Trust will take part in the appraisal process each year with the first appraisal taking place within the first 6 months from appointment.
- Disseminate lessons learned from local and national child and adult safeguarding practice reviews and internal management reviews and advise on the implementation of recommendations.
- Challenges practice and take appropriate risks and using these to inform future practice
