Job overview

Base: Main base Ashford / St Peter’s Hospital, with requirement to work across both St Peter’s and Ashford Hospital sites to fulfil role and working at any other Trust site as required.  Post-holder will be required to travel to patient’s home and between local community hubs.

An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Tobacco Dependency Advisor to work within Ashford and St Peters Hospitals maternity services to specifically deliver smoking cessation support to women, pregnant people and their families in a flexible and innovative way.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the Tobacco Dependency Advisor for Maternity. 

They will provide intermediate stop smoking support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, behavioural support, practical and social support, and Nicotine Replacement Therapy

They will plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines for pregnant women and inpatients.  This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues

They will contribute to National and local drivers by verifying and auditing data for local, regional and National submission.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will have in-depth experience of behavioural change, managing own clinics and caseloads with minimal supervision and have the ability to work both independently and autonomously.

They will participate in educating women and pregnant people about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and support and advise women and pregnant people and their families about passive smoking

They will advise/support other professionals on smoking in pregnancy issues, including carbon monoxide (CO) screening. 

They will deliver VBA training for the Maternity workforce & work with the maternity education team and Consultant Midwife for Public Health to devise a training package

They will support ward staff and students in actively engaging in smoke free conversations / facilitating groups to support behaviour change around tobacco smoking.

They will contribute to the reporting of data and assurance relating to Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle (V3) Element 1: Reducing smoking in pregnancy
