Job overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly-motivated nurse with a passion for pain management to join our Pain Team. This would be an ideal role for an experienced band 5 nurse with the skills to develop to band 6 level. The role will initially focus on inpatient services, providing clinical care, service development and education.
Working within our multi-disciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to develop clinical skills; taking responsibility for your own caseload, advising medical and surgical teams about pain management and acting as an advocate for patients and their carers. Your development will be supported by our team of band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialists and Band 8 Lead Pain Nurse.
You will also assist in the development of Pain Service; act as a role model and mentor; and develop and deliver training within the Trust. The post offers a fantastic opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to progress your career in pain management.
Main duties of the job
Candidates for this post will ideally have at least two years’ post qualification experience, preferably in a post-surgical environment.
You will need to demonstrate excellent clinical knowledge and skills and have a genuine passion for helping patients effectively manage their pain.
We are looking for someone with the communication and organisational skills needed to practice autonomously as well as in a team. Experience in teaching as well as guideline, protocol and clinical audit process development would be a significant advantage.
Above all, we are looking for someone who has the commitment, professionalism and dedication to make a difference to our patients.
The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team in pain management managing patients with acute, chronic and complex pain conditions to ensure that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. They will demonstrate a developing level of knowledge and expertise within the speciality and provide education, advice and support to other health care professionals and patients and relatives with the support from the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will act as a role model and mentor for students and other members within the wider Trust.
The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the on-going development of clinical practice, audit and research and standards of care within the service in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.

Clinical responsibilities
Assist the other members of the Pain Management Team with the provision of
effective; evidence based pain management across the Trust.
To understand when a patients’ care is beyond own clinical limitation and to liaise
with senior members of the team, or other professionals for advice.
Work in an organised, flexible manner, responding to the changing and challenging
needs of the service.
Support and enable patients and carers to make informed decisions relating to their
treatment and management.
Initiate, plan, administer and evaluate patient care with regards to acute and chronic
pain management strategies.
Assist in the delivery of a patient-centred, clinically effective and dynamic pain
management service, for both in-patients and outpatients with support from senior
colleagues.
Act as a role model for other staff.
Act as a source of expertise on the management of pain and provide an advisory
service to patients and to the multi-disciplinary team.
Contribute to the development of pain management policies, protocols and pathways
to ensure continuous quality improvement of the service.
Undertake the mentorship role in support of learners.
Participate in the development of specialist pathways of care and organise own
specialist workload in liaison with clinical nurse specialist or lead nurse specialist.
Have an understanding of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to
pain management.
Receive and act appropriately on referrals.
Develop delivery of nurse specialist reviews of patients in outpatients clinic, including
TENS, post injection review, medication advice in conjunction with Consultant Dr’s or
Non-Medical Prescriber health care professionals.
Working within the multi-disciplinary team initiate appropriate investigations and
referrals to other health care professionals.
Participate in the pain management programme.
Work in close liaison with the lead nurse specialist and multi-disciplinary team to
ensure that safe, effective, holistic patient care is delivered.
Collect and collate relevant audit data.
3.3 Research and audit
Plan, develop and participate in departmental audit and research projects which will
enhance the service and lead to improvements in pain management. Participate in
developing action plans and disseminating information.
Use audit and research findings in the delivery of teaching and the development of
patient care and disseminate relevant research to wards and departments.
Critically evaluate research findings and promote the use of evidence-based practice
in pain management.
Actively seek to improve practice through the application of research and in
collaboration with colleagues to continually develop the service.
3.4 Personal Professional Development
Maintain own professional portfolio and reflect upon practice to meet needs of NMC
revalidation.
Actively share knowledge and expertise and contribute to the Trust as a whole.
Have responsibility to ensure annual appraisal, agree objectives which reflect service
needs and develop personal development plans.
Participate within the context of the NMC code of Professional Conduct at all times.
Act as a role model demonstrating high standards of care and providing professional

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse Part or 12
- Recent qualification or equivalent experience in acute setting
- Teaching qualification (eg Preceptorship, ENB 998).
- Pain management qualification or module within degree or Masters.

- Post-operative pain management experience eg. Management of epidurals/PCA’s
- Demonstrates professional updating of knowledge in past one/two years.
