Job overview

The Nephrology Department provides secondary and tertiary care to renal patients throughout South West Wales. Out-patient clinics are held in Morriston Hospital (Swansea), Princess of Wales Hospital (Bridgend), Neath Port Talbot Hospital (Baglan), Prince Phillip Hospital (Llanelli), West Wales General Hospital (Carmarthen), Withybush Hospital (Haverfordwest) and Bronglais Hospital (Aberystwyth). There is a 24 bed renal ward at Morriston Hospital. There are two haemodialysis units on the Morriston Hospital site and a further three satellite dialysis units in West Wales (Carmarthen, Aberystwyth and Haverfordwest). 

Duties will include: 

·              Cover of emergency and elective patients 

·              Advice regarding provision of CVVHD to critical care patients 

·              Out Patient Clinics – general nephrology, CAPD and transplant 

·              Haemodialysis patients 

·              Peritoneal Dialysis patients 

·              Ward rounds 

·              Participation in audit and research 

·              Participation in the on call rota

It is essential that you reside within 20 miles or 30 minutes of Morriston Hospital for the non-resident element of the on call due to the potential need for urgent attendance.

Main duties of the job

This post to replace a substantive consultant who is leaving their post. The post is required as a substantive appointment. In addition to participating in the renal on call commitments within Morriston Hospital (1 week in 9) where you will be looking after a 24 bedded ward. During the on call, you will also be responsible for overseeing/supporting reviews of patients requiring inpatients nephrology consults along with your specialist trainees (on average 1 or 2 reviews a day). You will be responsible for delivery of a nephrology clinic in Morriston and a nephrology clinic and ward reviews in Glangwili general hospital, Carmarthen. In these clinics you will be expected to see up to 16 follow ups or equivalent (new patients reviews will count as 2 follow up patient reviews). You will participate in the clinical activities providing care for haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplant recipient clinics in Morriston Hospital.

  • Registered with the GMC
  • Licensed to practice
  • MCRP Qualification or equivilant
  • On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in Nephrology

Experience
