Main duties of the job

As a Chief Cardiac Physiologist specialising in Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM), you will play a key role in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of patients with heart rhythm disorders. Working closely with cardiologists and multidisciplinary teams, you will support the management of patients with conditions such as arrhythmias, heart failure, and those requiring device therapy. Your role will involve conducting diagnostic tests, assisting with implantations and follow-ups of cardiac devices, and ensuring the accurate interpretation of results to guide effective patient care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To assist in the establishment, co-ordination and delivery of cardiology technical services for Cardiology patients across the Northumbria Trust requiring electrocardiograph (ECG), exercise tolerance test (ETT), echocardiography, ambulatory monitoring, pacemaker and implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) follow-up services or cardiac catheterisation.
  •  Assist in ensuring the delivery of high quality Cardiology technical services, working in line with National Service Framework (NSF) recommendations.
  • To deputise in the absence of the department head to manage a team within the Cardiology department, including clerical staff, Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs), Senior Assistant Technical Officers (SATOs) as well as basic, senior and chief cardiac physiologists.
  • Undertake advanced practice cardiac tests and procedures, interpret results, provide reports and inform the clinician.
  • Undertake clinical supervision and training for trainee staff and other professionals.
  •  Act as expert resource for technical Cardiology issues to both primary and secondary care.
  • Carry out research and development activities within department, including trial of new equipment.

Person specification

Qualifications / Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Expert with a high level of professional and Clinical knowledge acquired through formal training to Clinical Physiology degree level.
  • The post holder will have a degree in Clinical Physiology or BSc Health care sciences, specialising in Cardiology or equivalent, with a further qualification i.e. British Society Echocardiography (B.S.E.), British Heart Rhythm Society (BHRS) exams etc giving a masters equivalent.
  • Registered Physiologist with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or the Academy for Health Care Sciences (AHCS)
  • Immediate Life Support skills and current certificate.
  • BSE or BHRS accreditation
  • D32/33/34 NVQ Assessor or Mentorship certificate (Not Required for Bank Staff)
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification e.g. Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in Cardiology, significant experience at a senior level.
