An excellent opportunity has arisen to support a qualified radiographer to acquire the practice competencies and post Graduate Certificate in Mammography qualification.
The position is an 18-month fixed term appointment, working alongside members of the multidisciplinary team based at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, the City of Coventry Health Centre, George Eliot Hospital and on three screening mobiles. The successful candidate will be taught to carry our mammography examinations to NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) standards. The service also supports symptomatic imaging referrals from local surgical Out-patient clinics. Eligible candidates must hold a full current UK driving licence, have access to a vehicle for work purposes and as a minimum meet the essential criteria of the role. There may be further opportunities once qualified to apply for a substantive band 6 position.
Duties will be undertaken flexibly in the week to include a mixture of shift patterns to include weekend working, early starts and late finishes.
Secondment will be considered for internal candidates – If you are successful after interview, you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to acquire the skills and qualifications to carry out mammography to NHSBSP standards.
Exposure to both screening and non screening environments will be part of the training experience, where the candidate will be supported to learn the techniques required to perform breast imaging diagnostics at an optimal level. There will be further opportunities to develop leadership skills and become a competent radiographer within this speciality.
The post holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary team based at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire undertaking mammography examinations related to the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and symptomatic imaging referrals from local surgical Out-patient clinics.
Duties will be undertaken in a variety of settings including UHCW, the Coventry City Health Centre Unit, George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, and on the three mobile breast screening units according to NHSBSP guidelines and Warwickshire, Solihull & Coventry Breast Screening Service & ISO

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To learn to undertake screening mammography across twenty mobile and two hospital sites.
- To learn to perform accurate standard mammography examinations in a sensitive and professional manner, and be able to adapt techniques to individual patients/clients whilst adhering to a 6 minute appointment schedule.
- To learn to undertake mammography and associated specialist radiographic techniques at assessment and symptomatic clinics in static and satellite units as required.
- To learn to carry out mammography examinations which are optimal for radiological interpretation in 97% of cases.
- To perform regular Quality Assurance tests on the x-ray equipment (mobile units and static sites), log results accurately and inform the Superintendent Radiographer immediately of any results which are outside agreed parameters, or, if the post-holder is the most senior in
the department, to take actions to resolve the problem. - To adhere to IRMER regulations and local rules of practice.
- To liaise with in house RPS physicists and with other members of QA team to maintain regular and timely equipment checks following QA guidelines.
- To check and document identification according to departmental practice for screening and symptomatic patients/clients.
- To document any reported breast problems, significant clinical signs and symptoms according to ISO 9001:2015 standard operating procedures.
- To operate RIS/PACS systems accurately and attend MDT’s regularly.
- To take part in regular image analysis and clinical audit sessions of mammography standards to maintain a technical repeat rate of less than 2%.
- To take part in regular local and national client satisfaction surveys for screening clinics.
- To learn to perform specialised mammography views in assessment and symptomatic clinics as well as using highly specialised and complex digital equipment to allow radiologists and advanced practitioners to perform accurate biopsies on impalpable lesions.
- To learn to act as Clinic Coordinator in the assessment and symptomatic clinic.
